No. 2 Softball cruises to pair of run-rule victories over Ohio State, Syracuse

Texas outscored Ohio State and Syracuse 28-6 to sweep Friday’s slate.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 2 Texas Softball (7-1) run-ruled both Ohio State and Syracuse during its Friday doubleheader on the second day of the Bevo Classic at McCombs Field. Texas defeated Ohio State, 14-6 (five innings), before dismantling Syracuse, 14-0 (five innings) in the nightcap.
Texas moved to 7-1 overall on the season and has won five-consecutive games, including four-straight run-rule victories.
Game 1
In game one Friday, Texas took down the Ohio State Buckeyes (3-3), 14-6, in five innings. The Longhorns remained dynamite at the plate, driving in 14 runs on nine hits, including four home runs.
Senior catcher Reese Atwood continued to dominate, mashing a team-high two home runs and six RBI against the Buckeyes. It was Atwood's third-straight game with a home run. The Sandia, Texas, product finished 2-for-3 with both of her hits being home runs, including her first grand slam of the season. Atwood roped her first home run – a two-run shot, in the bottom half of the second before detonating a grand slam in the third. Atwood reached base three times after being struck by a pitch. Senior second baseman Leighann Goode joined Atwood with a multi-hit performance of her own and reached base in all four plate appearances. Goode went 2-for-2 with three RBI, three runs scored, a home run, stolen base and two walks. Goode connected on her fourth home run of the season on a two-run shot in the fifth.
Junior center fielder Kayden Henry hit her first home run of the season – a three-run rocket in the second – , was walked three times and stole two bags. Junior first baseman Katie Stewart, freshman infielder Jaycie Nichols, freshman utility Alisa Sneed and freshman infielder MaTaia Lawson added a hit apiece with Lawson driving in a run as well.
In the circle, junior RHP Teagan Kavan got the rock to begin and tossed 2.1 frames, surrendering five runs on seven hits while punching out four. Senior RHP Citlaly Gutierrez (2-0) recorded the win after spinning the last 2.2 frames, curtailing the Buckeyes to one run on three hits with a strikeout.
Texas struck first in the opening frame when Goode singled up the middle to plate Henry and give the Longhorns an early 1-0 lead. The Horns erupted in the second inning as Henry launched a three-run home run to center field, scoring Nichols and Sneed, before Atwood followed with a two-run blast to left of her own to extend the advantage 6-0.
After the Buckeyes answered with three home runs in the top of the third, Texas responded with a five-run bottom half. Sneed scored on a passed ball as Maloney advanced to third, and Atwood delivered the decisive swing with a grand slam to left center, scoring Goode, Henry and Maloney. The Longhorns added insurance in the fifth when Goode homered to score Henry, and Lawson later singled through the right side to plate Wallace and end the ballgame.

Bottom 2: Kayden Henry homered to center field, plating in Jaycie Nichols and Alisa Sneed, bringing the score to 4-0.
Bottom 2: Reese Atwood swung a home run to left field, bringing in Leighann Good and raising the score 6-0.
Top 3: Taylor Cruse hit a single home run to left center putting the buckeyes on the board, 6-1.
Top 3: Sara Tarr doubled to right field, advancing Hailey Lang to third and driving in Abbie Wilhelm raising their score 6-2.
Top 3: Sami Bewick hit a home run to left field, driving in Hailey Lang and Sara Tarr, making the score 6-5.
Top 3: Skylar Limon homered to right field, tying the game 6-6.
Bottom 3: Ashton Maloney advanced to third, and Alisa Sneed scored on a passed ball. The run was unearned, giving Texas the lead, 7-6.
Bottom 3: Reese Atwood hit a grand slam, driving in Leighann Good, Kayden Henry and Ashton Maloney. Texas increased the lead 11-6.
Bottom 5: Leighann Goode hit a home run, bringing in Kayden Henry and increasing the Longhorns lead 13-6.
Bottom 5: MaTaia Lawson singled through the right side, Katie Stewart advanced to third while Adayah Wallace came home, widening the margin 14-6.
Game 2
Sophomores Cambria Salmon (RHP) and Brenlee Gonzales (LHP) combined in the three-hit shutout. Salmon sizzled in the circle to earn her first win of the season after tossing four scoreless innings and striking out three. Salmon did not allow a walk. The Beaumont, Calif., product twirled 2.2 hitless innings before giving up a base knock in the top of the third with two down. Gonzales pitched the fifth in relief and retired the side with a strikeout and two ground outs.
Texas's 10-run first against Syracuse was the difference-maker.
Goode was perfect at the plate again after going 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Atwood went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Senior Kaiah Altmeyer finished 2-for-2 with two RBI, two runs scored and a walk, and Stewart went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Victoria Hunter had an RBI single, Caigan Crabtree added an RBI single, Viviana Martinez recorded an RBI single, Taylor Anderson drove in a run on a sac fly and Ashton Maloney scored a run on a groundout to shortstop.

Bottom 1: Reese Atwood reached on a fielder's choice and recorded an RBI. Leighann Goode advanced to second and Kayden Henry moved to third, while Ashton Maloney scored, an unearned run, due to her reaching base via error.
Bottom 1: Katie Stewart lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, driving in a run. Kayden Henry scored on the tag.
Bottom 1: Victoria Hunter singled to left field, while Viviana Martinez advanced to second; Reese Atwood advanced to third; with Leighann Goode scoring a run.
Bottom 1: Kaiah Altmeyer singled to left center, plating two runs. Victoria Hunter advanced to second, while Viviana Martinez and Reese Atwood scored, extending their lead 5-0.
Bottom 1: Ashton Maloney reached on a fielding error by the Syracuse shortstop. Kaiah Altmeyer advanced to third, and Victoria Hunter scored an unearned run.
