STANFORD, Calif. – No. 3 Texas Softball (14-1) won its 12th-consecutive game after run-ruling No. 16 Arizona, 12-2, in five innings to close out the DeMarini Invitational Sunday at Stanford Softball Stadium.
The Longhorns boost their record to 14-1 overall after a 5-0 weekend at the DeMarini Invitational, including three ranked wins with two 10-run wins vs. No. 16 Arizona and a 4-3 victory over No. 10 Stanford. The Horns also notched their seventh run-rule win of the season after downing the Wildcats.
After going up 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Texas' 10-run bottom of the third was the difference-maker against the Wildcats. Texas outhit Arizona at a 13-4 clip. Of Texas' 13 hits, four were doubles.
Junior RHP Teagan Kavan (6-0) earned her third ranked win of the weekend. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native got the start and limited Arizona to two runs on four hits with five strikeouts in four innings of work. Kavan stranded runners at third in back-to-back innings in the second and third. Kavan tossed three scoreless frames before Arizona broke through with two runs in the top of the fourth. Freshman RHP Hannah Wells threw an inning of relief after entering for the fifth inning and retired all three batters she faced. Wells struck out the first two batters before forcing a groundout to short to clinch the win.
Five different Longhorns had multi-hit games against Arizona. Senior left fielder Kaiah Altmeyer led Texas offensively against her former team, going 2-for-2 at the plate with a team-high three RBI. Junior center fielder Kayden Henry had a 3-for-4 performance with an RBI and run, tying her season high in hits. The Dickinson, Texas, native has posted back-to-back games with three hits. Senior right fielder Ashton Maloney went 1-for-2 with a two-RBI double to left field. Senior designated player Reese Atwood had her sixth multi-hit game of the season after going 2-for-3 with a run and RBI. Junior shortstop Viviana Martinez finished 2-for-3 with a double and run. Senior second baseman Leighann Goode scored a team-high three runs after going 1-for-1 at the plate while drawing a team-high two walks.
Texas struck first in the bottom of the first after Atwood's single to center pushed Goode to third base, who then scored on an errant throw by Arizona for a 1-0 lead.
After a quite second, Texas put up a 10-spot in the third inning. It all started when Katie Stewart was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in Goode for a 2-0 lead. Altmeyer tacked on another run on her RBI single up the middle to score Martinez. Hannah Wells recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice to score Atwood from third for a 4-0 advantage. Nichols bashed an RBI single to right to plate Adayah Wallace and make it 5-0 Longhorns. The Horns continued to add on more runs on Maloney's two-RBI double to left followed by Henry's RBI double to center for an 8-0 lead. Atwood recorded her second hit of the game on an RBI single to left to score Henry and then Altmeyer recorded her second hit of the inning – a two-RBI single through the right side – to push the lead to 11-0.
