Longhorns notch second straight shutout win
AUSTIN, Texas — For the third time in its first eight games, No. 3 Texas posted a run-rule victory, defeating UTRGV, 14-0, in seven innings at UFCU Disch Falk Field on Tuesday night.
The Longhorns (8-0) scored in five of their six trips to the plate against the Vaqueros (3-5), capped off by a six-run sixth. Texas mounted seven of its first eight runs with two outs, as the Longhorns finished 7-for-13 in those key situations.
Ten different Texas players collected a knock, led by Aiden Robbins' three-hit and three-RBI performance. Robbins rocketed a first-inning solo shot before delivering run-scoring singles in both the fourth and sixth frames.
Casey Borba, Temo Becerra and Andrew Ermis also all totaled multi-hit efforts in the win.
After Robbins' opening-punch, Ermis and Ethan Mendoza drove in a pair of runs with back-to-back two-outs singles in the second.
One inning later, Ashton Larson produced a two-out RBI of his own to pad the lead to out 4-0.
In the fourth, Ermis and Robbins struck again, tacking on two more tallies.
Carson Tinney punctuated the four-run frame with a 445-foot two-run blast that cleared the 32-foot 'Monster' in center field.
The Longhorns bookended their co-season-best 14 runs by sending 10 batters to the dish, scoring six times on as many hits.
Robbins, Becerra, Anthony Pack Jr. and Presley Courville combined to plate five tallies in the inning, with Pack Jr. adding the final run by scampering home on a wild pitch.
On the mound, Texas twirled its second straight shutout, extending its scoreless streak to 22 1/3 innings.
In his first career start, right-hander Sam Cozart (2-0) logged the win, tossing four innings of one-hit baseball. The freshman struck out eight of the 16 batters he faced.
Relievers Cal Higgins, Hudson Hamilton, Jason Flores and Ethan Walker teamed up to hold the visitors to three hits the rest of the way.
Following their season-opening eight-game homestand, the Longhorns head to Houston for the 2026 BRUCE BOLT College Classic at Daikin Park. Texas opens its three-game weekend slate against No. 9 Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m. on Friday.
