Hall of Fame head coach becomes seventh active skipper with 1,000 Division I victories
HOUSTON — Texas head baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle recorded his 1,000th career victory on Saturday night, as the third-ranked Longhorns beat Baylor, 5-2, at Daikin Park.
Schlossnagle became the seventh active head coach with 1,000 Division I wins under his belt. He is also now the 70th skipper in NCAA history — regardless of level — to reach the milestone.
Across his 25-year head coaching career at UNLV (2002-03), TCU (2004-21), Texas A&M (2022-24) and Texas (2025-present), Schlossnagle has totaled a 1,000-469 (.681) mark.
"You have to have an awesome family that's supportive of you and then you have to be able to work at schools who are committed to winning," Schlossnagle said. "I've been at places that were just doing okay, but then they rewarded success. That's what happened at UNLV and later at TCU. As we won, we earned more support from the school. Then you end up at places like Texas A&M and Texas, where support is through the roof and you just have to do the work. So, I've been really lucky to be at great places and have awesome players, assistant coaches and tremendous support."
The Longhorns (10-0) raced out to a 5-0 lead over the first three innings, highlighted by outfielder Anthony Pack Jr. The freshman plated three of Texas' first four tallies, delivering a pair of run-scoring singles in his first two at-bats.
Casey Borba capped off the offensive outburst, laying down a safety squeeze to add to the Longhorns' advantage in the third.
Texas' pitching staff held the Bears (6-4) in check the rest of the evening, yielding two runs on only four hits.
Right-handed hurler Max Grubbs (2-0) logged the win, tossing 1 2/3 scoreless in relief of starter Luke Harrison.
Grubbs, righty Michael Winter, left-hander Haiden Leffew, southpaw Ethan Walker and right-hander Thomas Burns (2) combined to pitch the final 5 2/3 frames without allowing a run.
With the victory, the Longhorns are one of the final four remaining unbeaten teams nationally, alongside No. 4 Mississippi State, New Mexico and USC.
After notching back-to-back wins to open the BRUCE BOLT College Classic, Texas wraps up its weekend against Ohio State at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
