Potter’s career-best round leads No. 4 Men’s Golf in opening day at Amer Ari Invitational

WAIMEA, Hawaii — The No. 4 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 19-under 269 on Thursday to rest in seventh place after the opening day of the Amer Ari Invitational at Mauna Lani Resort. Senior Luke Potter recorded a career-low 18-hole score of 9-under 63 and is tied for third in the individual standings through 18 holes.
Starting on hole 1, Potter tallied birdies on holes 2, 5, 7 and 10 to get to 4-under before closing his round with an eagle on the par-five 15th hole and three consecutive birdies on 16, 17 and 18 to post his bogey-free round of 9-under 63. In Thursday's round, Texas counted scores from Potter (9-under 63), sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres (4-under 68), senior Christiaan Maas (3-under 69) and graduate Matt Comegys (3-under 69) to post a team round of 19-under 269.
No. 7 Auburn holds a five-stroke lead in the team standings at 32-under 256, while Stanford is second at 27-under 261. Arizona State is third at 23-under 265. The Longhorns are 13 strokes off the lead entering Friday's second round. The 20-team field features nine squads in the top 25 and four in the top 10 of the final fall Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (Oct. 31).
Mahanth Chirravuri of Pepperdine owns a one-stroke lead after the opening 18 holes with an 11-under 61. Auburn's Jackson Koivun is second at 10-under 62. Potter is tied for third with Michael Mjaaseth of Arizona State at 9-under 63.
The Amer Ari Invitational continues with 18 holes on Friday, Feb. 6 and concludes with a final round on Saturday, Feb. 7. Texas will be paired with UC Davis, Oregon State and UTA during Friday's second round which begins at 11:30 a.m. CT (7:30 a.m. HT) with a shotgun start.
The Lineup
- Senior Luke Potter recorded a career-low 18-hole score of 9-under 63 on Thursday and is tied for third in the individual standings, just two strokes off the lead. Starting on hole 1 in today's shotgun start, Potter tallied seven birdies (holes 2, 5, 7, 10, 16, 17 and 18) along with an eagle on the par-five 15th hole and went bogey-free on the day.
- Sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres posted a 4-under 68 in his opening round and is tied for 28th place. Starting on hole 3, he was 2-over through four holes before rallying to record birdies on holes 7, 8, 11, 12, 13 and 15 to finish at 4-under.
- Senior Christiaan Maas registered a 3-under 69 and is tied for 42nd place. Starting on hole 1, Maas tallied five birdies (holes 1, 4, 7, 10 and 11) during his round on Thursday.
- Graduate Matt Comegys fired a 3-under 69 and is tied for 42nd after the opening 18 holes. Starting on hole 3, he registered four birdies (holes 10, 11, 13 and 15) against just one bogey in his opening round.
- Senior Tommy Morrison carded a 3-under 69 and is tied for 42nd place. Starting on hole 2, he made a bogey on his opening hole before rallying for birdies on holes 3, 10, 18 and 1 to close out his 3-under score.
- Competing as an individual, junior Jack Gilbert recorded an even-par 72 and is tied for 82nd. Starting on hole 16, he made five birdies (holes 18, 1, 2, 12 and 15) during his opening round.
