Longhorns match largest margin of victory in postseason contest
AUSTIN, Texas — Anthony Pack Jr. left the yard three times, as No. 1 seed Texas cruised to a 19-1 win over No. 4 seed Holy Cross to open the Austin Regional at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Friday afternoon.
With the victory, the Longhorns (41-13) punched their spot into the winners' bracket against Tarleton State (38-19) at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Pack Jr. became the first Texas player with three home runs in a postseason game and just the ninth overall. The freshman homered in all three of his at-bats to help the Longhorns tie a program-record six blasts against the Crusaders (25-29).
With his third round-tripper in the fifth inning, Pack Jr. notched his 70th hit, 10th home run and 49th and 50th RBI of the season.
Fellow outfielder Aiden Robbins mounted his fifth career multi-homer effort and plated three runs. Robbins' two-run shot in the fifth marked his 21st blast of the season, the fourth-most by a Longhorn in a campaign ever.
Jayden Duplantier capped of the Home Run Derby, delivering a grand slam in the sixth.
Texas scored in all eight of its trips to the plate en route to matching its largest margin of victory in a postseason contest. The Longhorns beat Quinnipiac, 20-2, on June 3, 2005.
In the win, Texas scored 14 of its 19 runs with two outs and totaled a season-high 21 hits.
Seven of the Longhorns' nine starting position players registered multi-hit performances, highlighted by Pack Jr., Carson Tinney, Adrian Rodriguez and Ashton Larson, who each had three hits apiece.
On the mound, the Longhorns held the Crusaders scoreless over the first 8 1/3 innings.
Texas right-hander Cody Howard (1-1) pitched two shutout frames to earn the win in relief of Luke Harrison.
Harrison faced one over the minimum in four scoreless, striking out seven. The southpaw tossed just 50 pitches.
Holy Cross starter Jaden Wywoda (6-5) was charged with the loss. Wywoda allowed eight runs on 11 hits across 4 2/3 innings.
The Longhorns are now 154-60-1 (.719) all-time in regional contests, including a 111-33-1 (.769) ledger in Austin.
