No. 12 Men’s Golf earns top seed in match play at Jackson T. Stephens Cup

Bennett and Comegys share co-medalist honors at 9-under overall to both earn first collegiate individual victory.
FRISCO, Texas — The No. 12 Texas Men's Golf team carded a final-round score of 9-under 279 on Tuesday to earn the top team finish by 21 strokes in the stroke-play portion of the Jackson T. Stephens Cup at PGA Frisco Fields Ranch East. Junior Daniel Bennett (70-68-69) and fifth-year Matt Comegys (68-71-68) shared co-medalist honors with matching 54-hole totals of 9-under 207, as both players secured their first collegiate individual win.
The Longhorns secured the top seed for the match-play portion of the tournament. Texas will face No. 2 seed Texas A&M in an 18-hole match play event on Wednesday to determine the team champion. Tee times will begin at 12:31 p.m. Central from the 1st tee, and Golf Channel will provide live coverage on Wednesday from 3-6 p.m. Central.
In Tuesday's final round of stroke play, Texas counted scores from Comegys (4-under 68), Bennett (3-under 69), freshman Brooks Harper (2-under 70) and sophomore Adam Villanueva (even-par 72) for a team score of 9-under 279.
The Longhorns recorded a three-round total of 25-under 839 (283-277-279), while Texas A&M earned the second seed at 4-under 860 (285-287-288). Rice placed third at 2-under 862 (286-289-287), and Utah took fourth at 25-over 889 (290-294-305).
Comegys overcame a bogey on his opening hole on Tuesday to register five birdies and 12 pars over his final 17 holes to card a 4-under 68. Bennett was 1-over through two holes in his final round but responded with four birdies and 12 pars to close out his 3-under 69. Comegys' best previous collegiate finish was a tie for second at the 2025 OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational last year. Bennett had finished runner-up a total of five times in his collegiate career prior to joining Comegys as co-medalist, including a solo second-place showing during last week's season-opening tournament at the Folds of Honor Collegiate (Sept. 7-9).
All five Longhorns finished in the top 10 in the individual standings. Freshman Brooks Harper (72-73-70), who made his collegiate debut in this event, and junior Eduardo Derbez Torres (73-69-73) tied for eighth at 1-under 215. Sophomore Adam Villanueva placed 10th with a 1-over 217 (76-69-72).

- Junior Daniel Bennett fired a 3-under 69 on Tuesday to earn co-medalist honors with a 54-hole total of 9-under 207 (70-68-69). Bennett earned his first collegiate victory after finishing runner-up a total of five previous times in his career. After a bogey on hole 2, he posted four birdies (holes 3, 7, 15 and 18) to finish at 3-under during his final round.
- Fifth-year Matt Comegys carded a 4-under 68 in his final round to claim co-medalist honors with a three-round score of 9-under 207 (68-71-68). This marked his first collegiate victory, as his previous best finish was a tie for second at last year's OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational. After a bogey on his opening hole, Comegys tallied five birdies (holes 3, 6, 7, 15 and 16) to finish at 4-under on Tuesday.
- Making his collegiate debut, freshman Brooks Harper recorded a 2-under 70 on Tuesday to tie for eighth with a 54-hole total of 1-under 215 (72-73-70). Harper posted five birdies (holes 1, 6, 7, 11 and 17) during his final round.
- Junior Eduardo Derbez Torres fired a 1-over 73 in his final round to tie for eighth with a three-round score of 1-under 215 (73-69-73). Derbez Torres tallied three birdies (holes 4, 7 and 12) on Tuesday.
- Sophomore Adam Villanueva registered an even-par 72 on Tuesday to place 10th with a 54-hole total of 1-over 217 (76-69-72). Villanueva posted four birdies (holes 1, 7, 15 and 16) during his final round.
