- Title:
- Assistant Coach
Former All-America selection, and 2020 Jan Strickland Outstanding Assistant Coach Award recipient Jean-Paul Hebert (JOHN-PAUL A-bear), is into his seventh season as the assistant men’s golf coach. Prior to this position, Hebert served for three and a half years as the team’s volunteer coach.
Hebert joined the Longhorns in a volunteer capacity in November of 2010. In that role, he assisted in sixteen team victories, nine medalist honors, back-to-back Big 12 Championships (2013 & 2014), and the 2012 NCAA Championship at Riviera Country Club. Additionally, he helped coach and develop the talents of six All-Americans in Cody Gribble, Dylan Frittelli, Jordan Spieth, Julio Vegas, Toni Hakula, and Brandon Stone.
Since coming on board full time in June of 2014, Hebert has supported the development of several more All-Americans including Beau Hossler, Scottie Scheffler, Gavin Hall, Doug Ghim, Steven Chervony, Cole Hammer, Pierceson Coody, and Parker Coody, has seen 21 more team victories, 21 more individual wins, and three more Big 12 titles. At the NCAA level, the Longhorns have collected top-5 finishes in four of the past five championships, including runner up finishes in 2016 & 2019. While the 2020 season was cut short, the squad was credited with a final team ranking of No. 4 in the country.
“We’ve been very fortunate to have Jean-Paul on our coaching staff,” head coach John Fields said. “He is an outstanding coach who brings a wealth of knowledge and a valuable perspective to the table. Our collective performance with Men’s Golf at Texas has been immeasurably enhanced with Coach Hebert’s presence.”
A distinguished Texas Ex, Hebert played for Texas from 1991-1994 under head coach Jimmy Clayton. With Justin Leonard as a teammate, Hebert played a major part in leading the Longhorns to four Southwest Conference titles, and a second-place finish at the 1994 NCAA Championship his senior year. Individually, Hebert earned All-America honors in three straight seasons (1991-93), and was a four-time All-SWC selection. His 24 top-10 finishes throughout his collegiate career included a win at the 1992 Miami (Florida) National Collegiate, and a T3 finish at the 1993 NCAA Championship. Hebert graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications (1994).
“The opportunity to work with Coach Fields has been invaluable." Hebert said. "Texas is a place where we can be ourselves, and pursue our dreams. We are proud of what our former guys are doing, and we are excited about the possibilities of our current student athletes.”
Born and raised in Houston, Hebert was influenced primarily by his father Jay Hebert (1960 PGA Champion, and 1971 Ryder Cup Captain), as well as his uncle Lionel (1957 PGA Champion), and was molded by dozens of other great players and teachers including Jackie Burke, Dave Marr, Gardner Dickinson, and Butch Harmon, just to name a few.
“The list goes on and on," Hebert said. "I’m one of the lucky ones. And much of what I offer to our players has been handed down to me by the many teachers in my life.”
Following his collegiate career on the Forty Acres, Hebert competed professionally, and later worked for Golf Channel and CBS in live tournament production roles. He is also a member of the PGA of America.
