SAN ANTONIO -- Texas sophomore Dylan Frittelli landed his second consecutive top-five finish, and freshman Cody Gribble shot a 7-under 65 in the final round to secure his third top-three finish in as many tournaments, as the Longhorns placed second in the 12-team UTSA Lone Star Invitational Monday at the par 72, 7,267-yard Briggs Ranch Golf Course. Texas saved its low round of the tournament for last, as it posted a 6-under 282 to finish comfortably in second place with a 6-under 858 for the tournament. SMU placed third at 4-over par.
UT secures its fourth top-five team finish in as many tournaments this fall after taking fourth at The Topy Cup, third at the Olympia Fields Invitational and second at last week's rain-shortened Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. Texas A&M took the team title at 16-under par, and the Aggies' John Hurley took individual medalist honors after edging Frittelli by one stroke and Gribble by two shots at 10-under par for the tournament.
Frittelli (Pretoria, South Africa) followed his bogey-free rounds of 69 on Sunday with another 3-under 69 on Monday with four birdies and an eagle. Frittelli eagled the fifth hole, a par five at 510 yards and sank birdies at the seventh, 13th, 14th and 15th holes. Frittelli's second-place showing at 9-under par for the tournament marks his best finish since last February when he captured the Puerto Rico Classic.
After beginning the day in 10th place after two rounds, Gribble (Dallas, Texas) vaulted himself into the top-three with his 7-under 65. The nation's top-ranked player in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, Gribble notched his fourth and fifth eagles of the tournament in Monday's final round, with one at the par five seventh hole at 562 yards and the other at No. 13, a par five at 603 yards that he had eagled in Sunday's afternoon round.
Gribble added birdies at the fifth, sixth, 11th, 14th and 16th holes to finish with eight birdies for the tournament. Gribble took third place at 8-under par and has yet to finish outside the top-three in his first three collegiate starts.
Junior Donald Constable (Wayzata, Minn.) finished with a 4-over 76 in the final round behind birdies at the seventh and 12th holes. Constable tied for 12th place at 2-over for the tournament. Junior Bobby Hudson (Memphis, Tenn.) notched his low round of the tournament on Monday with an even-par 72 behind birdies at the fourth, fifth, seventh, 12th and 14th holes. Hudson tied for 32nd place at 9-over par.
Sophomore Steffan Schmieding concluded his first career varsity team appearance with a 5-over 77 behind birdies at the 13th and 17th holes. Schmieding finished in 53rd place at 18-over par.
Texas resumes fall tournament play on Monday, Oct. 26 at the Baylor Invitational in Dallas.
POST-ROUND QUOTES
Texas head coach John Fields
"I'm really happy with today's round, a 282. Texas A&M won the tournament yesterday with its back nine in the second round. We were able to push them for a little while today, but shooting under-par at Briggs Ranch is a really good thing, and I'm happy about that. We know we have the opportunity to get a lot better, and that's what we will aim to do. Individually, Dylan Frittelli was really strong. He had three great rounds in a row and played some really good golf. Cody Gribble came back today with a 65 and tried to help the team win the tournament, which was outstanding. I'm happy with Bobby Hudson's (even-par) 72 today.
"We will not be complacent at all. We've got to get better. The nice thing is we have had 11 of our 13 guys on the team play varsity events this fall. The guys who come to play every week and show the courage to be able to bring their game and leave everything else at home will be playing."
