No. 3 Men’s Golf’s Comegys ties for second at OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational

The Longhorns carded a 5-under 275 on Sunday to finish in fifth place in the team standings.
OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. — The No. 3 Texas Men's Golf team fired a 5-under 275 on Sunday to climb two spots and finish in fifth place in the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields Country Club. Graduate Matt Comegys carded a 2-under 68 in his final round to post a collegiate-best finish with a tie for second in the individual standings at 5-under 205 (69-68-68).
In Sunday's final round, Texas counted scores from senior Tommy Morrison (3-under 67), Comegys (2-under 68), sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres (even-par 70) and sophomore Daniel Bennett (even-par 70) to post a team round of 5-under 275. The score of 5-under 275 tied Oklahoma State for the best team round on Sunday.
No. 1 Oklahoma State rallied to win the team title with a 54-hole total of 6-under 834 (280-279-275). No. 4 Florida placed second at 4-under 836 (282-267-287), and No. 15 Texas Tech took third at 3-under 837 (279-277-281). Tourney host and No. 11 Illinois finished fourth at 2-under 838 (285-277-275), while the Longhorns were fifth at 4-over 844 (288-281-275). The 15-team field featured 10 squads in the top 20 of the Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches preseason poll.
Texas Tech's Tim Wiedemeyer earned individual medalist honors with a three-round score of 6-under 204 (69-68-67). Wiedemeyer birdied his final hole (the par-four, 498-yard 18th hole) to claim a one-shot victory over Comegys and Oklahoma State's Gaven Lane (69-66-70), who both finished at 5-under 205. Comegys registered his collegiate-best finish with his tie for second, as he previously tied for fourth twice during his time at Texas Tech.
The Longhorns are back in action on Sept. 29-30 (Monday-Tuesday) at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational presented by Charles Schwab at historic Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Lineup
- Graduate Matt Comegys fired a 2-under 68 on Sunday to tie for second in the individual standings at 5-under 205 (69-68-68). This marked a collegiate-best finish for Comegys, who twice previously tied for fourth during his time at Texas Tech. Starting his final round on hole 7, he tallied three birdies (holes 10, 11 and 1) against just one bogey on Sunday.
- Competing as an individual, senior Luke Potter carded a 2-over 72 in his final round to tie for 30th at 3-over 213 (71-70-72). Starting his final round on hole 18, Potter recorded a pair of birdies (holes 1 and 11) on Sunday.
- Sophomore Daniel Bennett registered an even-par 70 on Sunday to climb nine spots into a tie for 33rd at 4-over 214 (71-73-70). Starting his final round on hole 8, he was 2-over through his opening 11 holes before posting birdies on holes 1 and 6 to close out his even-par 70.
- Senior Tommy Morrison fired a 3-under 67 in his final round to climb 26 spots on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 36th at 5-over 215 (78-70-67). Morrison began his round on Sunday on hole 9 with a double bogey but responded with birdies on holes 12, 13 and 15 to climb to 1-under. After a bogey on 18 left him at even-par in his round, he added birdies on holes 2, 4 and 8 to close out his 3-under 67.
- Senior Christiaan Maas posted a 3-over 73 on Sunday to tie for 42nd at 7-over 217 (74-70-73). Starting his final round on hole 9, he tallied three birdies (holes 1, 3 and 5) on Sunday.
- Sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres fired an even-par 70 in his final round to tie for 62nd at 12-over 222 (74-78-70). Starting his final round on hole 10, he posted a pair of birdies (holes 5 and 6) against just two bogeys on Sunday.
