BRYAN, Texas -- Texas freshman Cody Gribble shot a 2-under 70 in both rounds Saturday to pace the fifth-ranked Longhorns at the Aggie Invitational at the par 72, 7,146-yard Traditions Golf Club.
The 12-team event strays from the current college golf scoring format, as each team features six players with the low five scores counting toward the team score. Texas collectively shot a 1-under 359 in round one and followed with an 8-over 368 in the second round to finish the day in fifth place at 7-over par.
Host Texas A&M sits in first at 23-under par, and Oklahoma State holds second at 8-under par. Texas Tech sits in third at 7-under par, and San Diego State is in fourth place at 2-under par. Individually, San Diego State's Tom Berry, Texas A&M's Geoff Shaw and Oklahoma State's Kevin Tway hold the lead through 36 holes at 6-under par.
Gribble (Dallas, Texas) scattered nine birdies through 36 holes on Saturday, and with his 4-under effort on the day, Gribble is tied for sixth heading into Sunday's final round. Sophomore Dylan Frittelli (Pretoria, South Africa), a semifinalist for the Ben Hogan Award, fired a 2-under 70 in round one and shot a 3-over 75 in round two. Frittelli is tied for 22nd place at 1-over heading into round three.
Junior Bobby Hudson (Memphis, Tenn.) shot a 1-under 71 in round one and followed with a 2-over 74 in round two. Hudson joins Frittelli in a tie for 22nd place at 1-over par. Senior Charlie Holland (Dallas, Texas) scattered nine birdies on the day while carding an even-par 72 in round one and a two-over 74 in round two. Holland is tied for 31st place at 2-over par heading into the final round.
Freshman Johnathan Schnitzer (Houston, Texas) shot a 4-over 76 in the round one before carding a 3-over 75 in round two. Schnitzer is tied for 53rd place at 7-over par. Senior Lance Lopez (Missouri City, Texas) finished with a 7-over 79 in both rounds Saturday and is in 74th place at 15-over par.
Texas tees off in Sunday's final round at 7:40 a.m. Central.
POST-ROUND COMMENTS
Texas head coach John Fields
"Today was challenging for our entire team. Playing at Texas A&M was new for every guy on our team, and obviously we want to play our best. We have tomorrow to make up lots of ground and though we have to climb a big hill, a great round on Sunday will go a long way. Cody Gribble is in the hunt for his first individual title. His 70-70 was very good today and put him within striking distance of the title."
