WINDEMERE, Fla. -- The No. 1 Texas Men's Golf team built upon its first-round lead at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational Monday afternoon and now holds a 10-stroke lead over runner-up LSU after carding a second-round 296 (+8). Through 36 holes, the Longhorns (278-296) have put together the only under-par score in the 15-team field at 2-under 574.
Freshman Jordan Spieth (65-73) continued to pace all individuals at 6-under 138. After opening with a 7-under 65 Sunday, Spieth made three straight bogeys on the third, fourth and fifth holes of Isleworth Country Club before finding his first birdie opportunity on No. 7. He made par on the next six holes before bogeying No. 14 and finishing with a pair of birdies on Nos. 15 and 17 for the 1-over scorecard.
Junior Julio Vegas trails Spieth by five strokes at 1-under 144 and is in fourth place. Like Spieth, Vegas finished the day at 73 after a round that included one birdie and two bogeys.
Senior Dylan Frittelli (73-71) recorded Texas' low round of the day at 1-under 71 to improve to a tie for fifth place at even-par 144. Frittelli, playing in UT's No. 2 position, made bogeys on the second and fourth holes before making a trio of birdies on Nos. 9, 13 and 16 to drop below par. He was one of just four players to finish the day with a 71 or better as scorecards averaged 76.92.
Sophomore Toni Hakula (70-79) is tied for 23rd place at 5-over 179 and junior Cody Gribble (75-81) rounds out the Longhorns in a tie for 56th.
The Longhorns are seeking their third-straight victory of the fall season after claiming the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate and Jack Nicklaus Invitational by a combined 36 strokes. A win for two-time U.S. Junior Amateur Champion Spieth would mark the first of his collegiate career.
UT is set to begin Tuesday's final round at 8:40 a.m. Central on the first tee alongside LSU (295-289=584) and third-place North Florida (287-300=587).
