AUSTIN, Texas -- The second game of a doubleheader between the No. 10/17 Texas baseball team and Hawai'i was suspended in the top of the eighth inning with the score tied 2-2 due to lightning in the area. In the first game, the Longhorns fell to the Rainbow Warriors, 6-1, snapping a six-game winning streak.
The suspended game will resume tomorrow at 1 p.m., with the fourth and final game of the series to be played 30 minutes after its conclusion. The game will resume with no outs and no one on base in the top of the eighth inning.
Texas trailed 2-0 until the fifth inning, when Kacy Clemens led off with a single and Brooks Marlow started a two-out rally with another single. Mark Payton followed by ripping a triple to left field to score both runners, knotting the game up 2-2. It was Payton's fourth triple of the season and 18th of his career, leaving him two shy of tying the school and Big 12 career record.
Earlier, Hawai'i scored single runs in the first and third innings to build the 2-0 lead. In the first, a pair of singles followed by a RBI groundout put the Rainbow Warriors on the board. A walk, single and sacrifice fly made it 2-0 in the third.
Texas starter Nathan Thornhill settled in from there, retiring the side in the fourth and fifth innings and working around a walk in the sixth. Thornhill gave way to reliever Travis Duke in the seventh, who came on with one on and one out and got out of the inning.
Hawai'i starter Jarret Arakawa struck out five in his six innings of work, limiting Texas to two hits outside of the fifth inning. Neither starter will factor into the decision after both were replaced in the seventh.
In game one of the doubleheader, Hawai'i took command early en route to a 6-1 win. The Rainbow Warriors put up three runs in the second inning and three more in the third, while pitcher Scott Squier surrendered just one run on two hits in a complete game.
Texas starter Dillon Peters was tagged for six runs, four of them earned, on seven hits and a walk. The junior, who entered with a 0.82 ERA in his first three starts, fell to 1-1 on the year.
In the second inning, Hawai'i used RBI singles by Kaeo Aliviado and Jordan Richartz for a 2-0 lead, and increased it to 3-0 when Aliviado came home on a wild pitch. An inning later, the Rainbow Warriors loaded the bases with no outs after two singles and a hit batsman. A sacrifice fly made it 4-0, and two Texas errors on an attempted sacrifice bunt brought in two more to give Hawai'i a 6-0 advantage.
The Longhorns scored their lone run in the fifth, when Brooks Marlow and Mark Payton drew walks, and C.J Hinojosa drove in Marlow with a single to left field.
Squier, a lefty who entered with a 2.57 ERA, improved to 2-0 with the win.
The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for Texas. Payton, who extended his reached base streak to 55 games by hitting safely in both contests, had the only other hit for Texas.
Light rain fell throughout the day, making for soggy conditions. The teams committed two errors apiece in the first game, though none had been committed in the second game when it was called.
TICKET INFO - Any Saturday ticket can be used as a General Admission ticket on Sunday. Sunday tickets will be honored for both the suspended game and the scheduled game.
