Johnson and Barrera combine for seven RBI
AUSTIN, Texas – Ben Johnson and Tres Barrera combined for seven RBI, the Texas bullpen pitched eight innings of one-run ball and the No. 6/4 Longhorns routed UT Arlington 10-2 Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Texas, which won for the 15th time in its last 17 games, improved to 30-8 overall heading into a three-game conference series with TCU that starts Thursday.
Johnson went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and a career-high four runs, while Barrera was 2-for-3 with a season-high four RBI. Johnson's four runs and Barrera's four RBI were the most by a Longhorn this year.
Chad Hollingsworth (1-0) picked up the win in relief, retiring all nine batters he faced in three scoreless innings. On a staff day, the Longhorns also got a strong performance from Ty Culbreth who allowed just one hit and faced the minimum in his three scoreless innings thanks to a double play.
Freshmen Blake Goins and Josh Sawyer each allowed a run in an inning of work, while Justin Peters pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
UT Arlington' Zach Hobbs (3-1), who was making his first start of the season after 18 relief appearances, took the loss. Hobbs allowed three runs on four hits and two walks in 2 2/3 innings.
Texas, which is off to its best start since opening 31-7 in 2010, took the lead in the third inning when Johnson blasted a two-run home run to left field. C.J Hinojosa then made it 3-1 on a two-out double to field that scored Barrera.
An inning later, the Longhorns put up another three spot to make it 6-1. Johnson picked up his third RBI of the night when he singled though the left side to score Kacy Clemens for the first run. A bases-loaded walk to Barrera brought in another run, and a sacrifice fly from Collin Shaw brought in the third.
Texas tacked on another run in the sixth, then three more in the eighth when Barrera cleared the bags with a bases-loaded triple.
Earlier in the game, an RBI groundout by UT Arlington's Darien McLemore with the bases loaded brought in the game's first run to give UT Arlington a 1-0 lead. But Hollingsworth, who replaced Goins with the bases loaded and no outs, limited the damage to one run. After the groundout, Hollingsworth made a nice defensive play to get the lead runner on an attempted squeeze bunt, then a popout to end the frame.
The Mavericks got their second run on a RBI single by Derek Miller in the fifth inning.
Like Hollingsworth did in the second inning, Culbreth came on and pitched out of trouble in the sixth. The Mavericks put their first two batters on base, but Culbreth came in and got a flyout and then a double play to end the inning.
Texas opens its series with TCU Thursday at 6 p.m. The Longhorns and Horned Frogs also meet Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m.
