Baseball’s comeback bid at No. 5 TCU comes up short, 6-5
04.25.2015 | Baseball
Longhorns scored three runs in the last two innings but were unable to complete comeback
FORT WORTH, Texas -- Bret Boswell homered, Collin Shaw had a two-hit day and the Baseball team made a late charge in an effort to overcome a four-run deficit at No. 5 TCU that came up just short, as the Longhorns fell 6-5 in game one of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Lupton Stadium.
Trailing 6-2, the Longhorns drew four walks in the eighth inning and had the bases loaded with two outs when TCU brought on closer Riley Ferrell, the fourth pitcher of the inning. Ben Johnson hit a chopper to shortstop for an infield single that made it 6-4, but Ferrell responded with a strikeout to strand the bases loaded.
In the ninth, C.J Hinojosa led off with a single and moved to third base on a wild pitch and passed ball, and Tres Barrera drew a walk to put runners on the corners with no outs. Texas cut the deficit to a single run when Michael Cantu hit into a double play, but could get no closer as Ferrell got another strikeout to end the game.
The Horned Frogs had tallied at least one run in four of the first five innings to build an early lead. Facing reigning Big 12 Pitcher of the Year Preston Morrison (9-1), Texas struck for three runs on six hits (one shy of his season high) in Morrison's 7 1/3 innings. Boswell drilled a solo homer, his second in as many games, off Morrison in the fourth and along with Shaw finished the game with two hits.
In the loss, Texas starter Parker French (2-3) surrendered six runs (five earned) on 11 hits in five innings.
After TCU put up a two-spot in the first, Brooks Marlow helped Texas strike back when he led off the second by smashing a triple off the wall in center field and scored on a RBI groundout by Zane Gurwitz. The Longhorns threatened to tie it as Boswell reached second base on a single and error in left field, but Morrison stranded him.
The Horned Frogs then strung together four straight singles to start the second inning, with first baseman Jeremie Fagnan's capping it off and scoring two.
Boswell homered in the fourth to make it 4-2, but single runs by TCU in the fourth (RBI double) and fifth (sacrifice fly) increased the Horned Frogs lead to 6-2.
Travis Duke (2 IP) and Kyle Johnston (1 IP) made scoreless relief outings to keep Texas in it, with the pair combining to allow just one hit over the final three frames.
Fagnan paced the TCU offense with a 3-for-4 day at the plate while four more Horned Frogs chipped in multi-hit games including Dane Steinhagen, who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Ferrell picked up his 11th save of the season.
The Longhorns and Horned Frogs play game two of the doubleheader at 4:15 p.m. It will be televised on Fox Sports Southwest.
