Junior forward Olivia Brook scored her third goal of the season during the opening minute of play

AUSTIN, Texas – An opening-minute score from junior forward Olivia Brook and a Kansas State "own goal" just 1:56 into the second half combined to power Texas soccer (7-6-1) to a 2-0 shutout victory over the Wildcats (4-7-3) on a blustery Friday evening at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Brook's third goal of the campaign came just 55 seconds into the match off a header from five yards out and set a successful tone for the Longhorns.

UT controlled possession throughout, out-shooting KSU by a commanding 19-3 count (11-1 in the opening half), including 8-1 in shots on goal, while managing a 7-5 advantage on corner kicks.

"A win is something we are always going to be excited about," Texas head coach Angela Kelly said. "Regardless of how ugly or pretty it might be. We had good possession in instances, playing against a classic bunker, a trapping style. Your speed of play has to increase, and you have to skip vertical channels. I thought we did a better job centrally of solving the pressure in the second half. You need that little bit of individual effort to break that press, but once you get in behind the midfield, then there should be some seams to play.

"We had quite a few good looks. I think we hit two or three crossbars in the first half. We did a good job to finish goals in the opening two minutes of each half. How we start and how we finish halves is something we focus on."

Texas wasted no time jumping to an early lead, scoring the match's first goal just 55 seconds in. Off a corner kick feed into the middle by UT freshman defender Emma Jett, a KSU player attempted to head the ball away from danger. Her clearance attempt instead traveled straight to Brook inside the six. She leapt above the crowd and headed a shot into the twine from five yards out to make it 1-0.

"We worked really hard this week on getting the ball in the back of the net," Brook said. "Working on just attacking really hard and coming out in the first five minutes of the game and scoring. That was our goal. It gave us a lot of energy and definitely paid off tonight."

The shooting gallery continued for the Longhorns at 4:27 as senior forward Jasmine Hart beat two defenders before firing a 12-yard shot just wide left of frame.

The lead nearly doubled on a pair of occasions for UT during the ninth and 11th minutes. First, sophomore midfielder Katie Glenn launched a try from the top of the box that rattled off the cross bar at 8:58. Following a blocked effort from freshman forward Cyera Hintzen that earned a corner, Brook again climbed above the crowd to head the ensuing feed off the woodwork.

The Wildcats finally managed a spell of possession during the 13th minute, earning consecutive corners but managing no shots.

The Burnt Orange & White continued its strong pressure with Hart and senior midfielder Julia Dyche forcing saves by KSU net minder Miranda Larkin at 22:38 and 27:48, respectively.

Kansas State finally got its initial shot on the board at 41:55 off a corner as a shot from 14 yards out on the left side of the 18 by midfielder Morgan Mauck ventured well high of frame.

Hintzen closed out the half for the Horns with a left-footed effort in the final minute that bounced in to force another KSU stop.

Out of the halftime break, Texas needed just 1:56 to double its advantage, getting a little help from its opposition for the third time this season. Hintzen battled hard to keep a ball in play near the left end line before crossing the ball to the middle. Unfortunately for KSU, a sliding clearance attempt by defender Megan Kalkofen was turned in at the left post for an own goal to push the Horns to a 2-0 lead.

Not satisfied with just two scores, UT continued to push with Hart driving a shot from 15 yards out on the right wing just outside the left upright at 57:04.

The Wildcats best threat of the contest came during the 65th minute off a corner kick. Following the feed inside the 18, Mauck tried her luck from 18 yards out, forcing Texas goal keeper Paige Brown to tip the ball over the cross bar for her lone save of the night.

Texas sophomore midfielder Katie Glenn soon forced Larkin saves in quick succession on attempts from out front at 70:19 and 71:28.

With the Longhorns in complete control of the possession, KSU had one final opportunity to get back in the match during the 84th minute but a Mauck shot from 30 yards out never came close to danger in traveling wide right.

Off a corner in the final minute of play, Jett nearly added Texas' third goal but her header from eight yards out was saved off the line by a KSU defender near the left post and cleared.
