The Longhorns notched 10 hits and got 4.1 scoreless innings from their bullpen in the win.
AUSTIN, Texas—A two-run homer by Patrick Mathis and a scoreless effort from the Texas bullpen sent the Longhorns baseball team to a 4-3 win over No. 6 TCU on Thursday night at UFCU Disch Falk Field.
The Longhorns (10-12, 1-0 Big 12) got on the board early off TCU starter Luken Baker.
In the second, the Longhorns strung together three infield singles, including a run-scoring knock by Tyler Rand who was making his first start since February 26 vs. Stanford after missing time with a broken hand.
Texas starter Morgan Cooper shut down the Horned Frogs through the first three innings, but TCU (17-4, 3-1 Big 12) bounced back in the fourth with a three-run homer to put themselves ahead 3-2.
Cooper rebounded, however, and finished with 4.2 innings of work before giving way to Travis Duke (2-1) and the Longhorns pen.
It was in the fifth that the Longhorns went ahead for good.
After Kody Clemens led off with a single, Patrick Mathis crushed a 2-0 pitch over the right field fence to make it 4-3 and give the Longhorns the lead.
In all, five Texas relievers combined to keep TCU off the board for the remainder of the game.
Freshman Chase Shugart came on with runners on the corners and one out in the sixth and quickly induced a first pitch double play to end the TCU threat.
Lefthander Josh Sawyer came on for a 1-2-3 eighth before Connor Mayes (1) closed it out in the ninth inning for his first save of the season.
