The Longhorns fell behind Texas A&M-Corpus Christi early and were shut out for the third time this year.
AUSTIN, Texas—The Longhorns (12-17) could not overcome an early 2-0 deficit and fell, 5-0, to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (11-16) on Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Freshman righthander Nolan Kingham got the start for Texas and lasted just two-thirds of an inning. Kingham (1-3) walked two and gave up a two-run homer to put the Longhorns in an early 2-0 hole before he was lifted.
Fellow freshman Blake Wellmann came on in relief and pitched a sold 2.1 innings, allowing a walk and two hits while striking out three to keep the score within reach. The combination of Nick Kennedy, Travis Duke and Beau Ridgeway also fared well against the Islanders as they gave up just three hits and did not walk a batter in four shutout innings.
It was in the ninth, however, that the game got away from the Longhorns. Connor Mayes entered and allowed a leadoff walk. After a fielder's choice, Mayes allowed three straight singles to make it 4-0 in favor of A&M-Corpus Christi. Jon Malmin came on in relief of Mayes and, after collecting the second out, allowed an infield single to give the Islanders their fifth and final run.
Offensively, the Longhorns couldn't muster much against Islanders righthander Aaron Hernandez who went 5.2 shutout innings while striking out a career-best nine for the win.
