SERIES NOTES
A LOOK AT THE LONGHORNS—The Longhorns have dropped five of their last six, including two of three at Oklahoma and Tuesday night vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi…Sunday's loss to OU was the Longhorns' third walk-off loss of the year…on Tuesday, Texas went behind 2-0 early and held the score there until the ninth when the Islanders added three runs…it was just the third time the Longhorns have been shut out this season.
A LOOK AT THE WILDCATS—Kansas State is coming off a 4-2 midweek win over Nebraska but enters the weekend 0-6 in the Big 12 Conference…the Wildcats were swept in their Big 12 opening series against Oklahoma State and were swept on the road at Texas Tech last weekend…K-State has five starters hitting over .300 on the year: Clayton Dalrymple (.339), josh Rolette (.330), Jake Wodtke (.322), Jake Scudder (.315) and Tyler Moore (.303)…RHP Levi MaVorhis has logged the most innings for the Wildcats with 39.1 on the year.
NEXT UP—Texas heads to Sugar Land on Tuesday for a mid-week matchup against the University of Houston…the game will be played at Costellation Field, home of the Sugar Land Skeeters…the Longhorns will be the home team in the matchup…Texas then hosts Kansas over the weekend in a three-game Big 12 Conference series.
ANOTHER HALL HONOR—On March 31, the National College Baseball Hall of Fame announced that Augie Garrido will be a part of the 2016 induction class as the winningest coach in collegiate baseball history…on January 8, he was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Hall of Fame, giving the Longhorns program four ABCA Hall of Famers, as he joined Billy Disch (inducted in 1966), Bibb Falk (1968) and Cliff Gustafson (1992).
THE DUKE—On Saturday at Oklahoma, left-handed reliever Travis Duke made his 100th career appearance…he made career appearance No. 101 on Sunday and No. 102 on Tuesday…sits at No. 5 among Texas pitchers all-time behind Huston Street (105), Randy Boone (106), J. Brent Cox (106) and Austin Wood (118).
FRESH UNDER PRESSURE—Freshman Kody Clemens is 11-for-28 (.393) with runners in scoring position, 3-for-6 (.500) with the bases loaded and 15-for-47 (.319) with runners on base…he's also 12-for-34 (.353) with two outs…he leads the Longhorns with 9 two-out RBI…fellow freshman Tyler Rand is 7-for-13 (.538) with RISP, 7-for-16 (.438) with runners on and 5-for-12 (.417) with two outs…he has 6 two-out RBI in just 12 starts.
OUTHIT 'EM—Texas has outhit its opponent 18 times this season, going 11-7 in those games…Texas is 1-9 when outhit by its opponent, picking up their first win on Saturday at OU.
A FAMILY AFFAIR—Familiar last names pepper the Longhorns roster as Kacy Clemens was joined by his brother, Kody, this season…their father, Roger, is a UT and MLB great…Nick Kennedy joined his brother, Ben, on the team this season…Kaleb Denny's father, David, also played at UT and Tate Shaw's brother, Collin. was on the Longhorns roster last season.
MR. CONSISTENCY—Senior LHP Ty Culbreth has thrown six straight quality starts for the Longhorns…his only start this season that was not a "quality start" (6-IP, 3-ER or fewer) came in his first outing of the season when he went 5 innings and allowed 1 earned run…his outing on February 27 vs. Stanford (8-IP, 2-H, 0-R/ER, 0-BB, 12-SO) earned him Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors…on the season, Culbreth has struck out 44 batters and walked just 8…Texas is 5-2 in his seven starts.
CORNERSTONES—Juniors Tres Barrera and Zane Gurwitz are the only two Longhorns to start every game for Texas…Barrera has made starts at catcher (11), third base (10), designated hitter (6) and first base (2) while Gurwitz has started in centerfield (20) and at second base (9)…Kody Clemens has played in all 28, with 27 starts.
NINE TO FIVE—On the season, the Longhorns have been outscored 24-6 in the ninth inning…on the flipside, Texas has outscored its opponents 19-3 in the fifth inning…overall, the Longhorns have outscored their opponents 134-120 in total.
MILESTONE TRACKER—With his win on February 20 vs. UNLV, Garrido reached 800 career victories as head coach of the Longhorns…he is 38 wins away from 2,000 in his collegiate career…Garrido already has the most victories all-time for any NCAA head baseball coach.
