Nolan Kingham threw seven innings of two-run ball but the Longhorns could not overcome the deficit.
AUSTIN, Texas—In Friday night's Big 12 Conference opener, Texas Baseball was edged by No. 6 Texas Tech, 2-1, at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Sophomore Nolan Kingham (2-2) was brilliant in the ballgame for the Longhorns, notching yet another quality start. The right-hander went seven innings, allowing just two earned runs while walking none and striking out three.
Kingham's first blemish came in the top of the third when Texas Tech second baseman Michael Davis hit a solo homer to left-center to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead.
The Longhorns answered back in the home half of the third however, as redshirt-sophomore Tate Shaw went deep off of Tech's Davis Martin (3-1) for his first career home run to tie the ballgame at 1-1.
A seventh inning hit-and-run proved to be the difference in the ballgame. With the teams knotted at 1-1, the Red Raiders got a leadoff base runner on a hit by pitch. One batter later, TTU's Michael Berglund hit a double to right to plate the deciding run, putting Texas Tech up 2-1 late.
The Longhorns threatened in the eighth and when Shaw got himself to third following a hit by pitch, but Texas was unable to get the tying run across. Texas threatened again in the ninth when they got runners on the corners with two outs, but did not manage to score.
The Longhorns and Red Raiders return to action on Saturday in a 4 p.m. matchup at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
