Baseball comes up short in 2-1 loss to No. 6 Texas Tech

The Longhorns dropped their second straight 2-1 ballgame to the Red Raiders.
AUSTIN, Texas—For the second straight game, Texas Baseball (13-8, 0-2 Big 12) could not overcome its one-run deficit, falling 2-1 to No. 6 Texas Tech (16-4, 2-0) on Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Longhorns got on the board first thanks to a pair of walks and a Texas Tech error that allowed Travis Jones to score, giving Texas a 1-0 lead.
The advantage was short-lived for the Longhorns, however, as the Red Raiders struck back in the third off of Texas right-hander Morgan Cooper. After issuing a leadoff walk, Cooper gave up three singles to the Red Raiders, putting the Longhorns in a 2-1 hole.
Texas, which did not record its first hit until the fifth, had several scoring opportunities in the ballgame but was unable to surmount the deficit.
Cooper (2-1) finished his outing with 6.2 innings pitched, allowing just two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out nine on a career-high 120 pitches. Chase Shugart finished out the ballgame for Texas with 2.1 scoreless innings of work.
Texas Tech's Steven Gingery allowed just one unearned run in six innings of work to pick up the win. Jose Quezada earned his second save of the year.
The Longhorns and Red Raiders return to action on Sunday in the series finale at 1 p.m.
