The Longhorns mustered just four hits on the afternoon.
AUSTIN, Texas—Despite getting out to an early lead, Texas Baseball fell 8-5 to No. 6 Texas Tech on Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Travis Jones opened the offense for the Longhorns with a leadoff walk. After Tate Shaw moved him to second, Kacy Clemens singled to left field to plate Jones and give Texas an early 1-0 advantage. Two batters later, Bret Boswell doubled—his first of two on the day—to score Clemens and put the Longhorns up 2-0 after the first.
Texas Tech responded in the second, picking up a run on a solo homer by Orlando Garcia off of freshman starter Blair Henley (2-2).
Once again, the Longhorns answered, this time via an RBI groundout off the bat of David Hamilton.
The following frame, however, the Longhorns saw their lead slip away. The Red Raiders evened things up in the third thanks to three singles off Henley and the ballgame was tied 3-3 after three innings of play.
It was in the fourth inning that Texas Tech broke things open. After two quick outs, Henley allowed two singles before exiting in favor of Kyle Johnston. Johnston uncorked a wild pitch allowing the first run to score before Tanner Gardner doubled in a run to put TTU up 5-3. The next batter followed with a two-run double of his own to put Texas behind 7-3.
The Longhorns scratched away at the deficit in the sixth as Boswell opened the frame with a double. With one away, Kody Clemens was hit with a pitch to put two on for the Longhorns and David Hamilton followed with his team-high fourth sacrifice fly of the season, this one scoring Boswell from third.
With Clemens on third, Texas Tech's pitcher balked, forcing Clemens home and making it a 7-5 ballgame.
The Red Raiders tacked on an insurance run in the eighth with a solo homer, but that would be all for the scoring.
The Longhorns next head to Texas State for a Tuesday night matchup in San Marcos before hosting UT-RGV on Wednesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
