Baseball completes sweep with 4-3 win over New Orleans

AUSTIN, Texas—Behind a four-RBI performance from Patrick Mathis, Texas Baseball completed the three-game series sweep of New Orleans with a 4-3 win on Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Texas (28-15) got on the board in the third inning by manufacturing a run. Zane Gurwitz led off the inning with a hit by pitch and promptly stole second base to put himself in scoring position. After a David Hamilton sacrifice bunt, Mathis grounded out to the right side to plate Gurwitz and give the Longhorns a 1-0 lead.
Despite not registering a hit off New Orleans (19-21) starter Riley Hodge through the first four frames, Texas managed to string together a pair in the fifth inning to extend its lead. Gurwitz once again kick-started things for the Longhorns, this time with a one-out single. He swiped his second bag of the game before Hamilton reached on an error to put runners on the corners. Mathis then came through with a double to right-center to plate both runners and push the Longhorns' lead to 3-0.
The insurance runs were needed as the Privateers tied things up in the seventh inning but Texas answered right back in the bottom half of the frame.
Michael Cantu and Zane Gurwitz took back-to-back hit by pitches to give the Longhorns two baserunners to open the inning. After another Hamilton sacrifice, Mathis stepped up and hit a long fly ball to left, which allowed the go-ahead run to score.
Nolan Kingham, who entered in relief in the seventh inning, finished out the ballgame with 2.2 scoreless innings to pick up the win for the Longhorns.
Texas will next head to Sugar Land on Tuesday night to face off against Louisiana-Lafayette at Constellation Field.
