ERIN, Wis. – Texas Men's Golf senior Scottie Scheffler closed the 2017 U.S. Open as the low amateur at 1-under par on Sunday at Erin Hills.
He followed his first and second rounds of 69 and 73 with a third-round 71 and fourth-round 73 to tie for 27th.
Scheffler made 15 birdies over four rounds, finishing 15 strokes behind champion Brooks Koepka.
He and Texas A&M's Cameron Champ were two of the 14 competing amateurs that made the cut into the weekend.
Scheffler becomes the first Longhorn to achieve the low amateur status since Jordan Spieth at the Olympic Club in 2012.
Longhorns Brandon Stone and Spieth tied for 35th.
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER NEWS CONFERENCE
QUOTE FROM TEXAS HEAD COACH JOHN FIELDS
"Pearl and I are so proud of Scottie's achievement as the low amateur in the 2017 U.S. Open. He now matches Longhorn alum Jordan Spieth as a multiple Texas State High School champion, a United States Junior Amateur champion, and the low amateur in the U.S. Open. [This is] simply monumental. We are equally excited for the Scheffler family. This is a great honor that speaks to their love, support, and encouragement."
