Baseball honors Garrido, collects 16 hits in win over Kansas

The Longhorns pounded out a season-high 16 hits on a night remembering the life of No. 16 Augie Garrido.
AUSTIN, Texas—On a day spent remembering the life and legacy of former Texas Baseball head coach and No. 16 Augie Garrido, it would be hard to script it any better as the Longhorns collected 16 hits en route to a 14-4 win over Kansas on Friday, March 16, at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Following a moment of silence for the late Garrido, who passed away early Thursday morning, the Longhorns, wearing black armbands in memoriam, wasted no time putting runs on the board.
RBI singles form Zach Zubia and Ryan Reynolds gave Texas an early 2-0 advantage in the game. After Texas starter Nolan Kingham sat down the first nine he faced in order, the Longhorns offense tacked on one more in the third thanks to another Ryan Reynolds two-out run-scoring hit. Reynolds would eventually reach base five times on the night, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, a walk, and a hit by pitch.
With Texas ahead 3-0, Kansas finally got to Kingham in the fourth thanks to a two-run homer, but the Longhorns immediately responded.
Following a leadoff single by Tate Shaw in the home fourth, Jake McKenzie laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Shaw, reminiscent of the "Augie Ball" days at the ballpark. The Longhorns would go on to break things open in the frame as Masen Hibbeler followed with a single to put runners on the corners. A wild pitch then plated Shaw and Duke Ellis, who went 2-for-4 with a pair of walks on the night, drove home Hibbeler with a single to left.
The scoring wouldn't stop there, however, as Kody Clemens then tripled to center to make it 6-2 in favor of the Longhorns. Zubia, who finished with a career-high four hits on the night, added another RBI single after Clemens to make it 7-2 before a passed ball plated the Longhorns' eighth run of the night.
Staked to an 8-2 lead, Kingham went back to work. The junior allowed a run each in the top of the sixth and seventh innings, but his offense answered back each time with a pair of runs and the Longhorns lead 12-4 after seven.
In the eighth, Andy McGuire added a pinch-hit run-scoring single before Austin Todd's single—the Longhorns' 16th hit of the night—scored Clemens to give the Longhorns a 14-4 lead.
Kingham (3-2) returned to the hill for the ninth and finished it out for his first complete game of the season.
Texas and Kansas return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Right-hander Blair Henley will take the mound for the Longhorns.
