Andy McGuire had his second consecutive three-RBI game and picked up the save in the Longhorns' win.
MANHATTAN, Kan.—A seven-run fifth inning propelled Texas Baseball (17-12, 6-3 Big 12) to a 9-5 win over Kansas State (16-12, 2-4) in the series finale on Saturday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium.
Texas took its first lead of the series in the first inning when Ryan Reynolds drove in Tate Shaw with an RBI single to put the Longhorns ahead 1-0.
The Wildcats responded in the bottom of the second with a solo homer off Chase Shugart (2-2). Once again, however, Texas regained its lead when Andy McGuire was hit with a pitch with the bases loaded and the Longhorns lead, 2-1.
In the bottom of the third, K-State produced a big inning. The Wildcats scored four runs on five hits to pull in front, 5-2, over Texas.
After the sides exchanged zeroes in the fourth, the Longhorns offense went to work in the top of the fifth.
With one out in the inning, Kody Clemens drew a walk to get things going. Reynolds then reached on an error before Zach Zubia worked a walk to load the bases. With the bases full of Longhorns, McGuire came through once again. The redshirt-junior unloaded a double to right-center to plate two and cut the deficit to 5-4.
David Hamilton then worked a walk of his own to reload the bases and pinch-hitter Joe Baker came through with an RBI single to left to tie the ballgame, 5-5. With the bases still loaded, Jake McKenzie and Shaw drew back-to-back walks to force in runs and put Texas out in front, 7-5. Masen Hibbeler then followed with a single through the left side to make it 8-5 before Clemens' RBI groundout made it 9-5 in favor of the Longhorns.
From there, Shugart settled in to finish with six innings of work. Matteo Bocchi followed with 1.2 scoreless and with two on and two outs in the eighth, McGuire came in front right field pitch.
McGuire (2) got the final out of the eighth before tossing a perfect ninth inning for his second save of the season.
The Longhorns return to action on Monday night with a 6:30 p.m. contest against McNeese State at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
