Late surge propels Men’s Golf to tie for ninth after NCAA Championship Second Round

Senior All-Americans Doug Ghim and Scottie Scheffler are both within three strokes of the individual lead after 36 holes.

STILLWATER, Okla. — A total of five birdies over its final three holes helped The University of Texas Men's Golf team to climb into a tie for ninth place Saturday after the second round in the NCAA Championship at Karsten Creek Golf Club. Senior All-American Scottie Scheffler and junior Steven Chervony each birdied their last two holes (holes 8 and 9), while sophomore Spencer Soosman added a birdie at the par-3 seventh hole.

Senior All-American and Ben Hogan Award winner Doug Ghim used a stretch of four birdies in six holes (1, 3, 5 and 6) on his back nine to post a 3-under-par 69 in the second round. He stands at -4 overall (140) after 36 holes and tied for ninth place on the individual leaderboard, just two strokes behind Auburn's Brandon Mancheno (6-under-par 138).

Scheffler overcame a triple bogey on his first hole of the second round (par-4 hole 10), recording four birdies en route to a 2-over-par 74. He stands at -3 overall (141) after 36 holes and tied for 13th place, just three strokes behind Mancheno.

Chervony registered three birdies in his second round to post a 1-over-par 73 and is +4 overall (148). Soosman added a pair of birdies to record a 3-over-par 75 in his second round and is +7 overall (151). Redshirt freshman Drew Jones tallied a single birdie in his second round to post a 6-over-par 78 and is +15 overall (159).

After weather delays of more than three-and-a-half hours Friday allowed the Longhorns to complete only 9-to-13 holes of their opening round before play was suspended, Texas returned to the course Saturday at 7 a.m. The Longhorns completed first-round action in a tie for eighth place at 9-over-par 289, paced by a 5-under-par 67 by Scheffler. Ghim posted a 1-under-par 71, and Chervony added a 3-over-par 75. Soosman registered a 4-over-par 76, and Jones tallied a 9-over-par 81.

Texas will tee off in Sunday's third round beginning at 8:17 a.m. Central alongside Auburn and Texas A&M. The top 15 teams following Sunday's third round will advance to Monday's final round of stroke play.

Only the top eight teams after the completion of Monday's final round will move on to the Match Play portion of the NCAA Championship. Match play quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for Tuesday, May 29, and the Championship final is set for Wednesday, May 30.
