Bryce Elder pitched another gem and Duke Ellis hit a two-run homer
AUSTIN, Texas – In front of a sold out crowd of 7,680, No. 22 Texas Baseball knocked off No. 2 LSU, 8-1, in the series opener at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Friday night.
Bryce Elder was brilliant yet again, pitching 6 2/3 innings and striking out seven batters. He allowed just one unearned run in the top of the first and nothing else the rest of the night. He allowed just four hits and he walked three batters. Elder picked up the win and improved to 2-0 this season.
LSU got a run across in the top of the first after some shaky defense by the Longhorns. Zach Watson singled with one out, moved to second on an errant pick-off attempt and scored after two wild pitches. But after that shaky start, the Longhorns did not allow anything else.
Texas tied the game up 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning when Tate Shaw worked a two-out bases-loaded walk. The Longhorns were unable to add to the lead and left the bases loaded to end the inning.
The Longhorns jumped in front, 3-1, in the fourth inning, by way of a Duke Ellis opposite-field two-run homer. The homer was the first for Ellis since March 3, 2018 against Northwestern.
With Texas clinging to the 3-1 lead in the seventh, Kamron Fields came out of the bullpen with two outs in the inning and got a flyout to get out of the jam. Fields would finish the game to earn his first save of the season.
Texas blew the game open with a five-run seventh inning that saw 11 Longhorn hitters go to the plate. The inning featured five hits, two walks and one LSU error.
Ryan Reynolds drove in the first run of the frame with an RBI single to right. A passed ball allowed pinch-runner Lance Ford to score from third base for the second run of the inning.
Hibbeler provided the biggest blow of the inning, lining a two-run single to left field to drive in both Shaw and Reynolds. An error later in the inning allowed Hibbeler to score the fifth and final run of the inning.
