Blair Henley and Cole Quintanilla combined to strike out 13 hitters.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 22 Texas Baseball erupted for a six-run fourth inning on Saturday and never looked back, beating No. 2 LSU 8-4 to win the series at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Playing in front of a sold out crowd for the second-consecutive day, the Longhorns (9-3) took advantage of a number of LSU (8-2) miscues that included 11 walks, one hit batter and one error.
Blair Henley started and pitched six innings, allowing just three earned runs and striking out six batters. He was credited with his second win of the season.
The second inning was a prime example of the Longhorns making LSU pay for mistakes, as Texas used four hits and four free passes to take a 6-0 lead.
Tate Shaw was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Michael McCann walked to put two runners on. A hard-hit single by Masen Hibbeler loaded the bases with nobody out. Duke Ellis got the scoring started with a bases-loaded walk.
Eric Kennedy drove in two runs with an RBI single to right field to make the score 3-0. Austin Todd followed with an RBI infield single in the hole.
The fifth run scored on some aggressive base running. Kennedy and Todd were at first and second and executed a double steal but a wild pitch allowed Kennedy to come all the way around to score.
Zach Zubia put the finishing touches on the inning, launching an RBI double to left field to make the score 6-0.
LSU mounted a rally in the top of the third inning, scoring three runs on four hits to trim the Texas lead to 6-3.
But Texas came right back to add two more runs to the lead in the third inning, with Kennedy and Todd both driving in a run to make the score 8-3.
Henley got into a little trouble to start the seventh inning and Texas called on Cole Quintanilla out of the bullpen. An error allowed a run to score but Quintanilla used a pair of strikeouts to get out of the jam.
Quintanilla brilliantly pitched the final three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out seven batters to record his second save of the season.
