The Longhorns were led seven shutout innings from Ty Madden and an inside the park home run by Zach Zubia.
AUSTIN, Texas – Led by a dominant performance from Ty Madden, No. 19 Texas Baseball blasted BYU, 11-1, Friday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns (3-3) will look to complete the four-game sweep of the Cougars on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Madden tossed seven shutout innings and allowed just one hit, an infield single in the seventh. The redshirt-sophomore struck out a career high 11 batters and picked up his first win of the season. Madden allowed only three base runners in the outing, the infield hit, a walk and a hit batter.
The middle of the Texas batting order had a huge night at the plate, accounting for 10 of the 11 runs batted in during the game. Cam Williams and Zach Zubia both went 1-for-3 with three RBI and Ivan Melendez was 2-for-4 with four RBI.
Zubia accomplished the unthinkable in the bottom of the first inning, hitting a three-run inside the park home run to center field. The Longhorns first baseman hit a sinking liner that rolled all the way to the wall after the center fielder was unable to make a diving catch. Zubia rounded the bases and slid into home for the Longhorns' first inside the park homer since Zane Gurwitz in 2015.
Texas put four more runs on the board in the second inning after Eric Kennedy started the frame with a double. Murphy Stehly walked before the next two batters were retired. But the Longhorns got a two-out two-run double from Williams and two-run single from Melendez to extend the lead to 7-0.
The Longhorns tagged the Cougars for three more runs in the sixth to go up 10-0. Williams hit an RBI groundout with the bases loaded and Melendez hit another two-run single.
One more run came home in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Douglas Hodo III to drive in Dylan Campbell.
Jared Southard and Coy Cobb each pitched an inning of relief to finish off the game.
