No. 19 Men’s Golf drops hard-fought 3-2 match to No. 3 Stanford at The Stephens Cup

The Longhorns conclude the prestigious event with a fourth-place team finish.
JUNO BEACH, Fla. — The No. 19 Texas Men's Golf team dropped a hard-fought 3-2-0 decision in match play to No. 3 Stanford on Wednesday in the third-place contest of the Jackson T. Stephens Cup at Seminole Golf Club. Seniors Mason Nome and Travis Vick both posted individual victories in the match against the Cardinal.
No. 13 North Carolina claimed the team championship with a 3-2-0 victory over No. 14 Florida State in the championship match. Six of the seven schools who participated in the team competition at The Stephens Cup are ranked in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (Sept. 30).
The Longhorns return to action when they compete at the Big 12 Match Play Tournament on Oct. 17-19 (Monday-Wednesday) in Hockley, Texas.
The Lineup
- Stanford's Ethan Ng posted a 2-up victory over freshman Keaton Vo during the first match on the course. Vo took his only lead of 1-up after a win on hole 2, but Ng claimed back-to-back holes to take a 1-up advantage through four holes. Ng extended his lead to 2-up with a win on hole 14, but Vo responded by winning two-straight holes to even the match thru 16 holes. Ng won the last two holes to close out his 2-up victory.
- Senior Mason Nome carded a 2&1 win against Barclay Brown. Nome won the opening hole and never trailed during the match. Brown won the fourth hole to even the match, but Nome immediately answered with a win on hole 5. Holding a 1-up lead through 12 holes, Nome won back-to-back holes at 13 and 14 to increase his cushion to 3-up. Brown won the 15th hole to trim the margin to 2-down, but the two players halved the following two holes.
- Karl Vilips registered a 2&1 victory over freshman Christiaan Maas. After the two players halved the opening hole, Vilips built a 5-up lead through 10 holes. Maas answered by winning three of the next four holes to cut the deficit to 2-down through 14 holes. The two players halved the next three holes.
- Nate Menon earned a 1-up win over freshman Jacob Sosa. Sosa held a 2-up lead through 11 holes, but Menon responded by winning back-to-back holes to even the match through 13 holes. Menon took a 1-up lead at 15, before Sosa squared the match with a win at 17. Menon closed out the 1-up victory with a win on the 18th hole.
- In the final match on the course between two of the top amateurs in the world, senior Travis Vick tallied an impressive 1-up victory over Michael Thorbjornsen. Thorbjornsen took a 1-up lead at hole 7, but Vick won three of the next four holes to build a 2-up advantage through 12 holes. Thorbjornsen won back-to-back holes at 14 and 15 to even the match. After the two players halved the 17th hole, Vick made birdie to win hole 18 and close out the 1-up win.
