No. 1 Baseball drops series at South Carolina

The Longhorns were swept in a Sunday doubleheader to drop the series to the Gamecocks.
COLUMBIA, S.C. – No. 1 Texas Baseball dropped the series to South Carolina, being swept in a doubleheader on Sunday at Founders Park. The Longhorns lost 4-2 in a seven-inning game to start the day before falling 9-4 to close the series.
The Longhorns (13-4) will continue their road swing in the state of South Carolina, heading to Charleston to play College of Charleston on Tuesday and The Citadel on Wednesday.
GAME 1
In a tightly contested seven inning game, the Longhorns scored the first run but the Gamecocks ended up pulling out a 4-2 win.
Tristan Stevens pitched 4.2 innings and gave up four runs, only two earned, and took his first loss of the season.
Eric Kennedy hit a solo homer in the top of the first to give the Longhorns an early 1-0 lead. The Gamecocks got the run right back in the bottom of the first on three hits, but a double play limited the damage to just one run.
South Carolina took a 3-1 lead with two unearned runs in the fourth inning after loading the bases with nobody out. Back-to-back sacrifice flies drove in the two runs.
The Longhorns got a run back in the fifth inning on a bases-loaded walk by Silas Ardoin. The Longhorns would have hoped for more though, leaving the bases loaded to end the inning.
The Gamecocks got the run right back in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead out to 4-2.
GAME 2
For the fourth consecutive game, Texas hit a first-inning homer to take an early lead. But the lead did not hold up and the Longhorns fell 9-4 to the Gamecocks.
Ivan Melendez launched his third home run of the series in the top of the first to give Texas a 1-0 lead. The homer was his seventh of the season and the 20th of his career.
South Carolina tied the game up 1-1 with a run on two hits in the bottom of the third inning. Starting pitcher Lucas Gordon was able to limit the damage by picking off a runner to end the inning. Gordon pitched 3.1 innings and was charged for three runs on five hits and four walks.
The Gamecocks put together a big five run fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead over the Longhorns. Coy Cobb got Texas out of the jam and was able to pitch 1.2 scoreless innings.
South Carolina scored three more runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 9-1 and put the game out of reach.
Texas scored three runs in the top of the ninth but were unable to complete the comeback.
