No. 2 Baseball falls to College of Charleston, 8-4

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – No. 2 Texas Baseball was unable to overcome a five-run first inning and lost to College of Charleston, 8-4, on Tuesday at College of Charleston Baseball Stadium at Patriot's Point.
Murphy Stehly went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI to lead the Longhorns offensively. Ivan Melendez, Silas Ardoin and Mitchell Daly all finished with two hits apiece.
College of Charleston opened the game with a five spot in the first inning, hitting a grand slam out to left and a solo homer to right. The Cougars added another run in the second inning on a fielder's choice groundout to take a 6-0 lead.
After the shaky first inning, Justin Eckhardt settled things down out of the bullpen. He pitched 3.1 innings and allowed two runs, while striking out three batters. Luke Harrison also had an extended relief outing, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing one run on four hits. Marcus Olivarez pitched a scoreless eighth inning of relief.
The Longhorns managed to cut the lead in half in the third inning, getting three-straight two-out hits to make the score 6-3. Daly started the inning with a single and moved to second. With two outs, Melendez drove in Daly with an RBI single. Ardoin hit a double to put two in scoring position and Stehly drove them in with a single up the middle.
Trey Faltine hit his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot, in the fourth inning to trim the CofC lead to 6-4.
The Cougars added an insurance run in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth to extend the lead out to 8-4.
Texas looked like rallying in the eighth inning, loading the bases with one out but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat without any runs coming across. The Longhorns loaded the bases again in the ninth but came up empty.
The Longhorns (13-5) are scheduled to close out their trip in the state of South Carolina with a game at The Citadel on Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT.
