No. 9 Men’s Golf wins title at Big 12 Match Play Tournament

The Longhorns earn a 4-1 victory over No. 21 Baylor in Wednesday’s championship match.
HOCKLEY, Texas — The No. 9 Texas Men's Golf team registered a 4-1 victory over No. 21 Baylor in the championship match at the 2023 Big 12 Match Play Tournament on Wednesday at the Clubs at Houston Oaks. The Longhorns claimed their second Big 12 Match Play Tournament title in the fifth year of the event, as Texas also won the crown in 2021.
In Wednesday's championship match against Baylor, graduate Nathan Petronzio posted a 5&4 win against Trey Bosco and sophomore Christiaan Maas recorded a 5&3 victory over Luke Dossey. Sophomore Jacob Sosa clinched the overall team victory with a 2&1 win against Davis Ovard, and graduate Brian Stark added a 1-up victory over Johnny Keefer.
During the three-day event, the Longhorns registered an overall record of 4-1 with the only setback coming in a 4-2 defeat to No. 19 Oklahoma in an exhibition match. Texas claimed a 5-0 victory over Cincinnati on Monday morning and a 3.5-1.5 win against K-State on Tuesday morning in pool play. The Longhorns posted a 3.5-1.5 victory over Oklahoma State in the bracket semifinals on Tuesday afternoon before concluding their run with the win against Baylor in the championship match on Wednesday.
Petronzio and Stark led the way individually during the tournament, as both posted 4-1 match-play records. Sosa also added a 3-1-1 mark on the week.
The Longhorns return to the course when they conclude the fall season at the Cypress Point Invitational on October 30-31 (Monday-Tuesday) in Carmel, Calif.
Texas defeats Baylor, 4-1
- Nathan Petronzio earned an impressive 5&4 victory against Trey Bosco. Starting on hole 1, Petronzio won the opening two holes and held his lead for the remainder of the contest. After Bosco won hole 3 to close the margin to 1-down, Petronzio won four-straight holes at 4, 5, 6 and 7 to build a 5-up cushion. Petronzio won hole 11 to move to 6-up, before Bosco won hole 12. The two players halved holes 13 and 14 to close out the win for Petronzio.
- Christiaan Maas registered a 5&3 win over Luke Dossey. Starting on hole 2, the match was even after two holes. Maas won holes 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 to build a 5-up advantage through 11 holes. Dossey won hole 15 to trim the lead to 4-down, but Maas finished off the match with a win on hole 16.
- Jacob Sosa clinched the overall team win with a 2&1 victory against Davis Ovard. Starting on hole 3, Sosa won the opening hole and never trailed in his match. With the match even after eight holes, Sosa won holes 11, 13 and 14 to build a 3-up lead through 12 holes. Ovard won hole 15, Sosa followed with a win on hole 16 and Ovard responded with a win on hole 17 to move to 2-down after 15 holes. The two players halved the next two holes and Sosa closed out his victory.
- Brian Stark added a 1-up win over Johnny Keefer. Starting on hole 2, Keefer jumped out to a 2-up lead after seven holes. Stark responded by winning holes 9 and 10 to even the match. With the match even after 17 holes, Stark made a birdie on the closing 1st hole to win the hole and his match.
- Keaton Vo fell to Zach Heffernan by a score of 5&4.
