The Longhorns gave up five runs in the ninth to drop the game and even the series.
WACO, Texas – No. 19 Texas Baseball gave up five runs in the ninth inning to lose to Baylor 10-9 on Saturday at Baylor Ballpark.
The Longhorns (25-12, 7-4) will look to bounce back and take the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Heston Tole was outstanding in relief after being called into the game in the bottom of the first inning. He pitched a season-high 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and was in line for hist first Texas win before Baylor's big ninth inning.
The Longhorns put up a four-run top of the first on a slew of hits to grab a 4-0 lead. Dylan Campbell singled and stole second before Eric Kennedy walked to put two runners on. Peyton Powell drove in the first run of the game with a single up the middle and Garret Guillemette followed with an RBI single of his own.
Jared Thomas drove in the third run with an RBI groundout and Jack O'Dowd made it a four-run first with an RBI double to right-center field.
Baylor came right back in the bottom half with five runs on four hits and three walks to take a 5-4 lead and chase starter Charlie Hurley out of the game.
Texas tied the game up 5-5 in the third on a bases-loaded walk by Ace Whitehead. The Longhorns were unable to retake the lead though, leaving the bases loaded to end the inning.
The Longhorns loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth on three-straight infield singles by Jayden Duplantier, Campbell and Kennedy. Powell put the Longhorns in front with a go-ahead RBI single to right field. Brown drove in a second run in the inning, lining an RBI single up the middle to make the score 7-5.
Texas tacked on two runs in the eighth inning with a two-run double by Guillemette, driving in Kennedy and Powell to make the score 9-5.
In the bottom of the ninth, Baylor took advantage of three walks and two hit batters to score five runs and win.
