No. 18 Men’s Golf wraps play at Valspar Collegiate Invitational

PALM CITY, Fla. — The No. 18 Texas Men's Golf team carded a final-round score of 6-under-par 278 on Tuesday to climb four spots and finish in a tie for 10th place in the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at the Floridian National Golf Club. Sophomore Tommy Morrison fired a collegiate-best 18-hole score of 7-under 64 in Tuesday's final round.
The Longhorns counted three under-par rounds during Tuesday's final 18 holes. In addition to Morrison's career-best 64, Texas received scores of 2-under 69 from graduate Brian Stark and 1-under 70 from senior Nathan Petronzio. Stark posted a 54-hole score of 2-under-par 211 (69-73-69) to finish in a tie for 13th place in the individual standings.
No. 11 Florida State captured the team title with a 54-hole total of 19-under-par 833 (280-278-275). No. 3 Vanderbilt took second at 15-under-par 837 (279-286-272), and No. 4 Arizona State claimed third at 10-under-par 842 (280-285-277). Only four squads in the 16-team event finished under-par in the 54-hole competition. The tournament field featured five squads in the Top 10 and ten squads in the Top 25 of the national rankings provided by Scoreboard powered by Clippd.
Luke Clanton of Florida State won individual medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 14-under-par 199 (65-68-66). Vanderbilt's Matthew Riedel (69-71-64) and Christian Castillo of Arkansas (67-70-67) tied for second place at 9-under-par 204. Stark was one of just 22 individuals in the 86-player field to record an under-par three-round score.
The Longhorns return to the course when they compete at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational on April 6-7 (Saturday-Sunday) in Augusta, Ga.
The Lineup
- Graduate Brian Stark posted a 2-under 69 in Tuesday's final round and tied for 13th place in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 2-under-par 211 (69-73-69). This marked a season-best finish for Stark, topping his tie for 14th place at the season-opening Sahalee Players Championship (Sept. 9-10). Stark tallied five birdies during his final round.
- Sophomore Tommy Morrison fired a collegiate-low 18-hole score of 7-under 64 on Tuesday and tied for 25th with a three-round total of 1-over-par 214 (76-74-64). His previous low 18-hole score was a 5-under 67 during the final round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate (Feb. 27) earlier this spring. Starting his round on hole No. 16, Morrison recorded birdies on 17, 2, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 13 to move to 7-under through 16 holes. He dropped a stroke with a bogey on 14 before closing his round with a birdie on the par-five 15th hole to finish at 7-under. Morrison jumped up 44 spots on the individual leaderboard during his final round on Tuesday.
- Senior Nathan Petronzio carded a 1-under 70 on Tuesday and tied for 25th at 1-over-par 214 (73-71-70). He tallied four birdies during his final round.
- Sophomore Christiaan Maas registered a 4-over 75 in his final round and tied for 68th at 9-over-par 222 (72-75-75), while sophomore Jacob Sosa fired a 7-over 78 and finished in 82nd place at 19-over-par 232 (74-80-78).
