Burns registers five-out save to secure win in home opener.
AUSTIN, Texas — No. 16 Texas jumped out to an early lead and sophomore right-handed pitcher Thomas Burns recorded the final five outs to seal the series opener over Dartmouth, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
With the Longhorns (3-1) holding onto a one-run lead over the Big Green (0-1) in the eighth, Burns entered with the bases loaded.
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound hurler recorded a strikeout and an induced a flyout to eliminate the threat before tossing a scoreless ninth to lock up Texas' home opener.
The five-out save marked the first of Burns' career after he made six starts as a freshman at Arizona State in 2024.
Junior right-handed reliever Ruger Riojas (1-0) picked up his first win as a Longhorn. Riojas retired the first eight batters he faced prior to navigating traffic in his third inning of work.
Dartmouth starter Marco Dumsky (0-1) was tagged with the loss. The sophomore righty surrendered three runs — two earned — across 4 1/3 frames.
Texas struck for two runs in the opening inning behind a sacrifice fly from junior shortstop Jalin Flores and an RBI double from sophomore left fielder Tommy Farmer IV.
The Big Green cut the deficit in half on a run-scoring groundout in the fourth, but the Longhorns responded with a tally in both the fifth and sixth frames.
Two innings later, Dartmouth pulled to within a run.
Sophomore designated hitter A.J. DeMastrie and junior center fielder Nico Bañez produced back-to-back RBI singles, setting the stage for Burns.
Fifth-year senior first baseman Kimble Schuessler led the charge offensively for Texas, totaling three of the Longhorns' six hits. Schuessler also plated a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Texas will look to clinch the series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for noon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
