Christiaan Maas is tied for second in the individual standings at 6-under through 36 holes.
LAKE BLUFF, Ill. — The No. 1 Texas Men's Golf team carded a two-round total of 4-under 556 (278-278) on Monday to rest in fourth place after the opening day of the Jackson T. Stephens Cup at Shoreacres Golf Club. Senior Christiaan Maas fired a 36-hole score of 6-under 134 (67-67) and is tied for second in the individual standings entering Tuesday's final round of stroke play.
In Monday's morning round, Texas counted scores from Maas (3-under 67), sophomore Daniel Bennett (2-under 68), graduate Matt Comegys (1-over 71) and senior Tommy Morrison (2-over 72) to post a team round of 2-under 278. During Monday afternoon's second round, the Longhorns counted scores from Maas (3-under 67), Comegys (even-par 70), Morrison (even-par 70) and sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres (1-over 71) to card another round of 2-under 278.
No. 8 LSU holds a four-stroke lead in the team standings at 14-under 546 (278-268), while No. 18 North Carolina is second at 10-under 550 (277-273). No. 19 Arizona is third at 5-under 555 (279-276), while the Longhorns are one stroke behind the Wildcats in fourth. The six-team field features four squads in the top 20 of the Golf Channel Preseason Top 30.
Noah McWilliams of LSU holds the individual lead after the opening 36 holes with a two-round total of 9-under 131 (64-67). Maas, a three-time All-American at Texas, is tied for second with SMU's William Sides (68-66) at 6-under 134 and three strokes behind McWilliams.
The Jackson T. Stephens Cup continues with a final 18 holes of stroke play on Tuesday, Sept. 16. Texas will be paired with SMU and Northwestern on Tuesday, and tee times will begin at 11:30 a.m. Central from the 10th tee. Golf Channel will provide live coverage on Tuesday from 3-6 p.m. Central. Following the conclusion of stroke play, the top four teams will advance to match play on Wednesday, when the top-two seeds will meet in the championship match and the number three and four seeds will face off in the third-place match.
The Lineup
- Senior Christiaan Maas fired a 36-hole total of 6-under 134 (67-67) on Monday and is in a two-way tie for second in the individual standings. In his morning round, Maas was 1-over through his first 14 holes. He made an eagle on the par-five 15th and added birdies on 16 and 18 to close out his 3-under 67. Starting on hole 10, Maas recorded five birdies (holes 13, 15, 18, 3 and 6) against two bogeys in his afternoon round.
- Sophomore Daniel Bennett carded a two-round score of 1-over 141 (68-73) and is tied for 19th. In his morning round, Bennett tallied three birdies (holes 3, 10 and 14) against just one bogey to post a 2-under 68.
- Graduate Matt Comegys registered a 36-hole total of 1-over 141 (71-70) and is tied for 19th. Starting on hole 10, he was 2-over through his first 15 holes in his afternoon round before closing with birdies on holes 7 and 9 to finish at even-par 70.
- Senior Tommy Morrison recorded a two-round score of 2-over 142 (72-70) and is tied for 26th. Starting on hole 10, he was 4-over through his first two holes in his afternoon round before making five birdies (holes 12, 13, 15, 16 and 17) against just one bogey and adding 10 pars over his final 16 holes to post an even-par 70.
- Sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres fired a 36-hole total of 4-over 144 (73-71) and is tied for 29th. He made a combined total of seven birdies during his two rounds on Monday.
