Christiaan Maas ties for third in the individual standings at 4-under overall.
LAKE BLUFF, Ill. — The No. 1 Texas Men's Golf team carded a final-round score of 2-over 282 on Tuesday to finish in fifth place at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup at Shoreacres Golf Club. Senior Christiaan Maas tied for third in the individual standings with a 54-hole score of 4-under 206 (67-67-72).
In Tuesday's final round, Texas counted scores from senior Tommy Morrison (2-under 70), graduate Matt Comegys (even-par 70), Maas (2-over 72) and sophomore Daniel Bennett (2-over 72) to post a team round of 2-over 282.
The top four teams in the standings following Tuesday's final round of stroke play advance to Wednesday's match-play portion of the tournament. No. 8 LSU earned the top seed with a three-round total of 14-under 826 (278-268-280), while No. 18 North Carolina claimed the second seed at 11-under 829 (277-273-279). No. 19 Arizona earned the third seed at 10-under 830 (279-276-275), and Northwestern claimed the fourth seed at 3-under 837 (280-279-278). The Longhorns finished fifth, just one stroke behind Northwestern, with a 54-hole total of 2-under 838 (278-278-282).
William Sides of SMU claimed the individual title with a three-round score of 7-under 203 (68-66-69), while LSU's Gunnlaugur Arni Sveinsson was runner-up at 5-under 205 (72-64-69). Maas was part of a four-way tie for third place along with Noah McWilliams (LSU), Daniel Svard (Northwestern) and Keaton Vo (North Carolina) at 4-under 206.
The Longhorns will return to the course later this week on Sept. 19-21 (Friday-Sunday) at the OFCC/Fighting Invitational in Olympia Fields, Ill.
The Lineup
- Senior Christiaan Maas fired a 2-over 72 on Tuesday to finish in a four-way tie for third place in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 4-under 206 (67-67-72). Maas recorded an eagle on the par-five 15th hole and added three birdies (holes 13, 18 and 4) in his final round. This marked his second top-10 showing in his first two events of the fall, as he previously tied for sixth at the Sahalee Players Championship (Sept. 6-7).
- Senior Tommy Morrison carded a 2-under 68 in his final round and climbed 10 spots in the individual standings to tie for 16th at even-par 210 (72-70-68). Morrison registered five birdies (holes 10, 15, 16, 2 and 4) on Tuesday.
- Graduate Matt Comegys recorded an even-par 70 on Tuesday and tied for 21st at 1-over 211 (71-70-70). He tallied four birdies (holes 16, 3, 4 and 6) in his final round.
- Sophomore Daniel Bennett registered a 2-over 72 in his final round and tied for 26th at 3-over 213 (68-73-72). Bennett carded three birdies (holes 1, 3 and 4) on Tuesday.
- Sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres fired a 2-over 72 on Tuesday and tied for 31st at 6-over 216 (73-71-72). He posted four birdies (holes 15, 18, 3 and 5) in his final round.
