No. 1 Men’s Golf takes second at Sahalee Players Championship

Bennett ties for second individually, while the Longhorns finish just one stroke behind Arizona State in the team standings.
SAMMAMISH, Wash. — The No. 1 Texas Men's Golf team posted a final-round score of 4-over 292 on Sunday to earn a runner-up finish in the Sahalee Players Championship at Sahalee Country Club. Sophomore Daniel Bennett fired a 1-over 73 in the final round and tied for second in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 2-under 214 (72-69-73).
Texas played without senior All-American Tommy Morrison, who is competing for Team USA at the Walker Cup at Cypress Point Club in Pebble Beach, Calif. Morrison paired with Jackson Koivun in Sunday morning's foursomes action and the duo earned a 1-up victory over Connor Graham and Tyler Weaver (Team Great Britain & Ireland). Morrison is currently on the course in his final singles match against Niall Shiels Donegan.
In Sunday's final round, Texas counted scores from senior Luke Potter (2-under 70), senior Christiaan Maas (even-par 72), Bennett (1-over 73) and graduate Matt Comegys (5-over 77).
No. 12 Arizona State earned the team victory with a three-round score of 3-over 867 (295-277-295) to finish just one stroke in front of Texas. The Longhorns posted a 54-hole total of 4-over 868 (288-288-292) to take second, while UCLA placed third at 9-over 873 (296-290-287). The 12-team field featured six squads in the top 20 of the Golf Channel Preseason Top 30.
Pepperdine's Brady Siravo claimed individual medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 3-under 213 (73-68-72). Bennett, who earned the Phil Mickelson Award last season as the National Freshman of the Year in men's collegiate golf, finished just one stroke behind Siravo in a tie for second with Harry Takis of San Diego State (76-71-67) at 2-under 214. Maas tied for sixth with a three-round score of even-par 216 (72-72-72).
The Longhorns will return to the course at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup on Sept. 15-17 (Monday-Wednesday) at Shoreacres Golf Club in Lake Bluff, Ill.
The Lineup
- Sophomore Daniel Bennett fired a 1-over 73 on Sunday to finish in a two-way tie for second place in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 2-under 214 (72-69-73). The finish tied his career best, as he previously placed second in a pair of tournaments last season.
- Senior Christiaan Maas carded an even-par 72 in his final round to tie for sixth at even-par 216 (72-72-72). Maas registered four birdies (holes 1, 6, 14 and 18) on Sunday.
- Senior Luke Potter posted a 2-under 70 on Sunday to climb 21 spots in the individual standings and finish in a tie for 13th at 3-over 219 (74-75-70). Potter recorded three birdies (holes 2, 10 and 11) against just one bogey during his final round.
- Graduate Matt Comegys registered a 5-over 77 in his final round to tie for 24th at 6-over 222 (71-74-77) in his Longhorn debut. Comegys carded four birdies (holes 1, 6, 13 and 18) on Sunday.
- Junior Jack Gilbert fired a 7-over 79 on Sunday to tie for 33rd at 9-over 225 (73-73-79).
- Competing as an individual, freshman Adam Villanueva carded a 3-over 75 in his final round to tie for 48th at 13-over 229 (76-78-75) in his Longhorn debut.
