No. 4 Men’s Golf concludes day one at The Desimone Invitational

Comegys is tied for fourth in the individual standings at 8-under through 36 holes.
DALY CITY, Calif. — The No. 4 Texas Men's Golf team carded a two-round total of 12-under 564 (286-278) on Monday to rest in a tie for ninth place after the opening day of The Desimone Invitational at Lake Merced Golf Club. Graduate Matt Comegys, who is competing as an individual in this event, fired a 36-hole score of 8-under 136 (66-70) and is tied for fourth in the individual standings entering Tuesday's final round.
In Monday's morning round, Texas counted scores from sophomore Daniel Bennett (2-under 70), senior Tommy Morrison (1-under 71), senior Luke Potter (even-par 72) and sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres (1-over 73) for a team score of 2-under 286. During the afternoon round, the Longhorns counted scores from Derbez Torres (5-under 67), Bennett (3-under 69), senior Christiaan Maas (2-under 70) and Potter (even-par 72) for a team score of 10-under 278.
No. 9 Arizona State holds a seven-stroke lead in the team standings at 29-under 547 (271-276), while TCU is second at 22-under 554 (273-281). SMU is in third at 20-under 556 (276-280). The Longhorns are 17 strokes off the lead but just five strokes behind Washington State in fourth place at 17-under 559. The 15-team field features five squads in the top 25 of the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (March 6).
Pongsapak Laopakdee of Arizona State owns a one-stroke lead after the opening 36 holes with a two-round score of 13-under 131 (64-67). SMU's Ben Steinmann is second at 12-under 132 (67-65), and Taishi Moto of Arizona is third at 9-under 135 (66-69). Comegys (66-70) is tied for fourth place with Washington State's Ben Borgida (69-67) at 8-under 136.
The Desimone Invitational concludes with a final round on Tuesday, March 10. Texas will be paired with Arizona and USC during Tuesday's final round which begins at 11:50 a.m. CT (9:50 a.m. PT) on hole 10.
The Lineup
- Competing as an individual, graduate Matt Comegys posted a 36-hole total of 8-under 136 (66-70) and is tied for fourth in the individual standings. Comegys recorded a season-low 18-hole score of 6-under 66 in the opening round. Starting on hole 18 in his morning round, he posted birdies on holes 18, 1, 2 and 4 to move to 4-under through his first five holes. After a bogey at 9, Comegys added birdies on holes 10, 12, 14 and 15 against a bogey on 13 to close out his 6-under 66. During his 2-under 70 in the afternoon round, he tallied three birdies (holes 9, 13 and 14) and an eagle on the par-four 11th hole.
- Sophomore Daniel Bennett recorded a two-round score of 5-under 139 (70-69) and is tied for 14th place. His morning round included two birdies (holes 12 and 14) along with 16 pars, Starting his afternoon round on hole 2, Bennett was even-par through his first 16 holes before making birdie on 18 and an eagle on the par-four 1st hole to close out his 3-under 69.
- Sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres carded a 36-hole total of 4-under 140 (73-67) and is tied for 19th. After a 1-over 73 in his morning round, Derbez Torres started his afternoon round on hole 5 and tallied five birdies (holes 8, 9, 12, 13 and 18) along with 13 pars for his 5-under 67.
- Senior Christiaan Maas fired a two-round score of 1-under 143 (73-70) and is tied for 39th. Starting on hole 1 in his afternoon round, he registered four birdies (holes 5, 14, 15 and 18) along with an eagle on the par-five 9th hole.
- Senior Luke Potter recorded a 36-hole total of even-par 144 (72-72) and is tied for 45th. Potter posted a pair of birdies (holes 9 and 18) in his morning round before adding five birdies (holes 11, 12, 14, 18 and 1) in his afternoon round.
- Senior Tommy Morrison carded a two-round score of even-par 144 (71-73) and is tied for 45th. Starting on hole 4 in his morning round, he tallied five birdies (holes 4, 8, 9, 11 and 18) en route to his 1-under 71.
