Becerra notches career-high five RBI in defeat
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The fourth-ranked University of Texas baseball team fell to Tennessee, 14-9, at Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Volunteers (34-17, 13-13 SEC) scored in all eight of their trips to the plate, overcoming an early Longhorns' lead.
Texas (36-12, 15-10 SEC) jumped ahead, 3-0, in the opening frame, but Tennessee responded with six home runs to secure the series victory.
The Volunteers launched a trio of solo shots across the first two innings to even the score, 3-3.
Trent Grindlinger delivered a go-ahead RBI double in the fourth before Blake Grimmer smacked a two-run blast in the fifth to pad the advantage to 6-3.
Temo Becerra answered for the Longhorns, notching a two-RBI single to pull the visitors within a runn. Becerra finished a triple shy of the cycle, totaling a co-career-high four hits and a career-best five RBI.
Tennessee replied with six unanswered tallies, highlighted by Reese Chapman's two-run homer in the sixth.
Stone Lawless bookended the Volunteers' barrage with a two-run jack in the eighth.
In the defeat, Casey Borba also left the yard, smashing his career-high 13th home run of the season.
Tennessee starter Evan Blanco (6-3) allowed five runs on seven hits across seven frames in the winning effort. Blanco struck out eight and issued three walks.
Texas hurler Luke Harrison (5-3) was tagged with the loss. Harrison yielded four earned runs over 3 2/3 frames.
The Longhorns and Volunteers conclude their three-game set on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m. CT / noon ET at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
