AUSTIN, Texas - During a rainy evening at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, Jonathan Walsh led the Longhorns to a 9-5 win over UT Pan American with his 3-for-4 effort, including a three-run home run and two-run double, on Wednesday.
Texas (14-9) drew first blood in the bottom of the first. Leadoff batter Mark Payton reached on a hit by pitch, and then stole second. After Jordan Etier struck out, Erich Weiss walked. Payton and Weiss scored on a triple to right field by Jonathan Walsh. Brooks Marlow walked to put runners on the corners, and then Broncs pitcher Bryan Maxwell threw a wild pitch that moved Marlow to second and plated Walsh. Then, Alex Silver doubled and scored Marlow. Jacob Felts grounded out and Landon Steinhagen struck out to end the inning with Texas up, 4-0.
UT Pan American (12-6) responded in the top of the second. With one out, Angel Ibanez singled through the left side. Mike McCarthy hit a hard ball to first base that was ruled an error, but Mark Payton found the ball, and was able to retire Ibanez at home on the play. After a single by Shane Klemcke, McCarthy moved to third, and scored on another single by Adrian De La Rosa. Dillon Peters ended the inning by getting Riley Goulding to chase a ball for a strikeout swinging.
The Broncs took the lead in the top of the third, 5-4. The inning opened with two consecutive singles by Derek Hagy and Roger Bernal. Then, Vincent Mejia hit a three-run home run off of Ricky Jacquez over the left field wall to tie the game. Ibanez tripled to left center, then scored on a groundout to second by McCarthy to move ahead of the Longhorns.
Texas tied the game again in the bottom of the fourth, after Landon Steinhagen singled through the left side. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Taylor Stell. Etier hit a double to left field, which scored Steinhagen and tied the game at 5-5. Weiss ended the inning by flying out in foul territory.
Steinhagen opened the bottom of the sixth with a single to right field. Stell followed with a walk, and Payton singled on a bunt to load the bases. Etier hit into a double play at second base, but Steinhagen scored and Stell stayed at third base. Weiss and Walsh walked, but Marlow grounded out to end the inning with Texas up 6-5.
Texas struck again in the bottom of the eighth. Etier and Weiss hit back-to-back singles to open the inning. Then, Walsh hit a three-run home run over the left field wall to put the Longhorns up 9-5. Payton extended his streak of consecutive games reaching base to 23 after one hit. He also stole his fourth base of the season.
In addition to Walsh's effort, Etier and Silver were each 2-for-4, and both hit a double. Steinhagen was 2-for-3 on the evening for his first multiple-hit game of the season.
Hoby Milner (5-3) earned the win, after pitching 6.0 innings of scoreless relief and giving up just two hits. He struck out eight batters, and walked just two. Dylan Badura (1-1) took the loss for the Broncs.
