No. 25 Texas pounds out 19 hits in 14-3 win at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas - Bouncing back from a heart-breaking 14-inning loss on Friday evening, the No. 25 Texas Longhorns registered a season-high 19 hits in a 14-3 win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders at Rip Griffin Park on Saturday afternoon.
Erich Weiss led the Texas hit parade, he went 4-for-6 with three runs, one home run and two RBI. Jonathan Walsh went 3-for-6 with one double and three runs. The Horns had six different players log at lest two RBI including Mark Payton with three RBI and Weiss, Brooks Marlow, Alex Silver, Taylor Stell and Jacob Felts with two apiece.
Texas Tech took a 1-0 lead with two outs in the bottom of the first when the wind carried a lazy fly ball by Tim Proudfoot over the fence down the rightfield line for a solo home run.
The Longhorns staked claim to a 4-1 lead with a four-hit outburst in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Weiss and Walsh both laced singles through the right side of the infield to put runners at the corners. Marlow blooped a flare into shallow left centerfield for an RBI single to knot the game at 1-1. Silver followed with a fourth consecutive single for the Longhorns, plating Walsh with a line drive to the gap in right centerfield for the go-ahead run. After Felts was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Stell hit a slow grounder to third, knocking in Marlow for a 3-1 lead. Jordan Etier appeared to end the inning with a grounder, but Tech's shortstop Proudfoot misplayed the ball allowing Silver to score on the error.
With one out, Stell reached on an infield single to shortstop. Etier threaded a single down the leftfield line to put runners at the corners. Payton was robbed of a hit on a diving play by Tech rightfielder, but the sacrifice fly brought Stell home for the 5-1 lead.
The Texas lead became precarious in the sixth inning. LeJeune reached on a leadoff single through the left side of the infield. Bo Altobelli followed with an infield single to short and both runners moved into scoring position when Etier's throw bounced pass Silver at first base. A groundout by Kevin Whitehead pushed LeJeune across, cutting the lead to 5-2. With two outs, Mason Randolph drew a pinch-hit walk and Brennan Moore reached on a throwing error to load the bases. Dillon Peters entered the game to relieve Texas starter Ricky Jacquez and induced an inning-ending flyout from Tech leadoff hitter Jamodrick McGruder.
Texas ballooned the lead to 8-2 with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Weiss legged out an infield single beating the pitcher to first base on a grounder to first. Walsh singled up the middle to put runners at the corners. After Walsh stole second on Marlow's called third strike, Silver was intentionally walked to load the bases. Felts blooped a two-run single into shallow right centerfield knocking home Weiss and Walsh for the 7-2 lead. Stell capped off the rally with a line-drive single to leftfield, pushing Silver across to inflate the cushion to six runs.
The cavalcade of runs continued for the Longhorns in the top of the eighth. With two outs, Walsh doubled down the leftfield line and Marlow followed with an RBI single, also down the leftfield line. Silver hit a wall-banger to the gap in right centerfield driving Walsh home with a double for the 10-2 lead.
Texas dropped the anvil on the Red Raiders with four runs in the ninth. It was keyed by a two-run double by Payton and a two-run home run by Weiss, his fourth of the season. Payton's double extended his streak of games reaching base at least once to 30.
Proudfoot was the lone Red Raider with multiple hits going 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI.
Jacquez earned the win for Texas. The freshman right-hander allowed two runs on four hits and four walks while striking out five over 5.2 innings. John Curtiss picked up his second save of the season. He allowed one run on two hits and two walks over 3.0 innings.
Neely was saddled with the loss for the Red Raiders. He allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits and one hit batter while striking out five.
Texas returns to action on Tuesday when the Longhorns host the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in a 6 p.m. contest at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
