Texas has five-game winning streak snapped
AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 7/7 Texas baseball team had its five-game winning streak snapped as it fell to No. 21/30 Rice 7-2 Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Longhorns (26-8), who had won the first two meetings of the season over the Owls (23-12), were outhit 13-1, while Rice right-hander Trevor Teykl pitched a career-high 5 1/3 innings in relief to earn the win.
Texas starter Lukas Schiraldi (5-2) had an uncharacteristic outing, allowing seven runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings. The junior had gone 3-0 with a 1.25 ERA in his three previous Tuesday starts, but allowed single runs in the second and third, and five in the fifth as Rice broke the game open.
Teykl (2-0) kept Texas hitless until the bottom of the fifth, when Ben Johnson hit a two-out RBI single up the middle that made it 7-2. Teykl came on in relief of starter Caleb Smith, who struggled with command, walking four in 1 1/3 and allowing one run.
Rice got on the board in the second, setting the table with a single and walk to lead off the frame, then bringing in a run on a two-out single from Charlie Warren.
Zane Gurwitz's RBI groundout in the bottom of the second tied it up, 1-1, but Rice took the lead back in the third, when Shane Hoelscher hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Connor Teykl groundout to make it 2-1.
The Owls then broke it open in the fifth, batting around for a five-run inning. John Clay Reeves and Ford Stainback recorded RBI singles and after Schiraldi was lifted for Travis Duke, another run-scoring single from Warren and a bases loaded hit batter made it 7-1.
Chad Hollingsworth and Ty Culbreth had solid outings in relief for Texas, combining to allow just two hits in 4 2/3 scoreless. Rice's Jon Duplantier came on to pitch the final 2 1/3 without allowing a hit for the Owls.
Texas returns to conference play this weekend as it hits the road for a three-game series at Oklahoma. The Longhorns and Sooners meet at 6 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
