SERIES NOTES
A LOOK AT THE LONGHORNS—Texas was dominant in a 12-3 win over Sam Houston State on Tuesday night in Austin…the 12 runs are a season-high for the Longhorns…last weekend, the Longhorns were swept in a four-game series against then-No. 12 California last weekend in Austin…it was the first four-game sweep in Longhorns history…Texas looked poised to win the series finale, but a 5-run ninth inning tied the game and sent it to extras.
A LOOK AT THE BRUINS—UCLA fell 20-12 in a slugfest at Cal St. Northridge on Tuesday night…UCLA committed 4 errors in the game but CSUN still added 15 earned runs…the previous weekend, UCLA competed at the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic and won all three games: 2-1 over Mississippi State, 4-2 over Oklahoma and 5-3 over USC in 14 innings.
NEXT UP—The Longhorns head to No. 3 Texas A&M on Tuesday for a midweek non-conference matchup against the Aggies…the Longhorns lead the all-time series 242-124-5…the teams last met in the 2014 NCAA Regional with the Longhorns taking 2 of 3, including the elimination game.
RECOVERY ROAD—Red-shirt sophomore Morgan Cooper made his second start of the season on Tuesday vs. Sam Houston and dominated in 6 shutout innings…he struck out a career-high 8 batters…it was his third app since missing all of 2015 while recovering from elbow surgery.
A BAKER'S DOZEN—Since missing the first series of the season, second baseman Joe Baker has 13 hits and is 13-for-39 in 10 games this season…he has 4 multi-hit games in that span, including a 3-hit effort on Tuesday night.s
SPECS—Since donning glasses on February 28, first baseman Kacy Clemens has hit .316 (6-for-19) with 2 home runs and 3 doubles to go along with a team-high 7 RBI…had hit just one home run in his career prior to this season.
KEEP ON DEALING—Senior lefthander Ty Culbreth, who was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week last Monday for his effort against Stanford, added his second quality start of the season on March 5 vs. California…he threw 8 innings and allowed 3 runs while striking out 6 in the game…Culbreth ranks second in the Big 12 in strikeouts (22) and innings pitched (21).
A FAMILY AFFAIR—Familiar last names pepper the Longhorns roster as Kacy Clemens was joined by his brother, Kody, this season…their father, Roger, is a UT and MLB great…Nick Kennedy joined his brother, Ben, on the team this season…Kaleb Denny's father, David, also played at UT and Tate Shaw's brother, Collin. was on the Longhorns roster last season.
BASES JUICED—The Longhorns are now 8-for-15 (.533) with the bases loaded this season, including a 3-for-6 effort on Tuesday night vs. Sam Houston State…they've also drawn a pair of bases-loaded walks on the year.
MILESTONE TRACKER—With his win on February 20 vs. UNLV, Garrido reached 800 career victories as head coach of the Longhorns…he is 44 wins away from 2,000 in his collegiate career.
HALL OF FAMER—On January 8, Garrido was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Hall of Fame…his induction gave the Longhorns program four ABCA Hall of Famers, as he joined Billy Disch (inducted in 1966), Bibb Falk (1968) and Cliff Gustafson (1992).
HAPPY AT HOME —The Longhorns have played 12 of its 13 games this season at home…overall this season, Texas plays just 18 of its 52 games away from UFCU Disch-Falk Field…among those 18 games is an April 12 contest against the University of Houston at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas, though the Longhorns will be considered the home team in that matchup.
