Baseball cruises to 6-2 win over Texas State
04.26.2016 | Baseball
Six scoreless innings from the Texas bullpen shut down the Bobcats offense after the third.
AUSTIN, Texas—Thanks to timely hitting and six shutout innings from the bullpen, Texas Baseball cruised to a 6-2 win over visiting Texas State on Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The win—the Longhorns' sixth in their last seven ballgames—moves Texas to 20-21 on the season.
With two outs in the opening frame, Tres Barrera drew a full-count walk. Kacy Clemens followed with a double to left to put two on for reigning Big 12 Player of the Week Joe Baker and the sophomore delivered.
Baker ripped a single to left-center to score both Barrera and Clemens and put the Longhorns out to an early 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats (22-20) would answer in the top of the third off starting pitcher Connor Mayes, adding a pair of runs to draw the game even at 2-2.
The deadlock did not last long, however, as Kacy Clemens drove a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall for his fourth homer of the season. The opposite field blast put the Longhorns on top 3-2.
The third inning scoring did not end there. Baker was hit by a pitch before consecutive singles from Patrick Mathis and Zane Gurwitz pushed the Longhorns lead to 4-2.
From there, the Longhorns pitching did not relinquish the lead and the offense continued to add to it.
Thanks to some aggressive baserunning by Travis Jones in the fourth, Texas added some insurance. The Longhorns designated hitter singled with one out in the inning and moved to second on a passed ball. Jones then swiped third base and came around to score when the throw went into left field to put the Longhorns ahead 5-2. A Tyler Rand sacrifice fly in the fifth made it 6-2 in favor of the home team.
After Mayes finished out the third, freshman Beau Ridgeway came on in relief. Ridgeway (2-0) tossed three shutout innings over the Bobcats, allowing just two hits while fanning three en route to his second win of the season.
Eric Dunbar followed Ridgeway with two scoreless and Chase Shugart came on to throw a perfect ninth inning to seal the win for the Longhorns.
The win is Texas' 24th in a row over the Bobcats. The two teams will meet again on May 17 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field for their third and final matchup of the season.
Next up for the Longhorns is a three-game series against No. 23 Oklahoma State at home in Austin. The Longhorns and Cowboys are currently tied for third in the Big 12 Conference and are each coming off series wins.
