The series loss is just the second for the Longhorns in league play this season.
AUSTIN, Texas—Defensive miscues and four unearned runs sent Texas Baseball to a 6-3 loss on Saturday night in game two of the doubleheader against Oklahoma State. The Longhorns (20-23, 9-8 Big 12) and Cowboys (27-15, 11-6 Big 12) return to UFCU Disch-Falk Field for the series finale tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
In the first, J.R. Davis led off the ballgame with a double. The next batter then reached on a throwing error by Ty Culbreth that allowed Davis to score and a two-out single made it 2-0 in favor of the Cowboys.
After its offense was shut out in game one, Texas responded for a run in the home half of the first. With two outs, Tres Barrera hit his first of two doubles in the ballgame and Patrick Mathis followed with an RBI single to make it 2-1.
The Longhorns tied it up in the second when Tyler Rand singled, stole second and scored on a Jake McKenzie single to right field.
With the game knotted at 2-2, Culbreth (8-3) shut Oklahoma State down through the next three innings until the sixth when the Cowboys put up a three-spot. A double and a single gave Oklahoma State the 3-2 advantage before Mathis dropped a fly ball in right field to put two in scoring position. The Cowboys followed with a sac fly and single that deflected off Culbreth to come out of the inning ahead 5-2.
The Longhorns appeared to threaten in the seventh. Joe Baker led off the frame with a walk and Zane Gurwitz followed with a single up the middle. After a sacrifice, pinch-hitter Kacy Clemens drew a walk to load the bases. Bret Boswell came on to pinch hit and struck out swinging on a full count to put two away for Texas. Travis Jones then beat out an infield single to make it 5-3. Kody Clemens followed with a tough 11-pitch at-bat but struck out to end the threat.
The Cowboys immediately responded, picking up an unearned run off Nolan Kingham, who pitched brilliantly in relief. The freshman righthander tossed 3.1 innings after Culbreth exited, allowing just three hits and one unearned run.
Barrera (double) and Baker (hit by pitch) both reached in the eighth but a double play ended the inning. Kacy Clemens reached in the ninth on another walk but the Longhorns couldn't tie it up.
