MORGANTOWN, W.Va.—Longhorns center fielder Zane Gurwitz went deep but Texas Baseball fell 11-2 to West Virginia on Friday night at Monongalia County Ballpark in game one of the three-game Big 12 Conference series.

Gurwitz gave the Longhorns (21-25, 9-10 Big 12) their only lead of the ballgame when he drove a 3-1 pitch over the wall in right-center. His fourth homer of the season put Texas out in front 1-0 in the second.

The Mountaineers (25-19, 9-9 Big 12) answered in the third, however, putting up a four-spot on righthander Morgan Cooper (2-4).

A pair of infield singles gave WVU two aboard with no outs in the frame before a single to right and a sac fly put the Mountaineers up 2-1.

West Virginia plated two more in the frame thanks to an RBI fielder's choice and an RBI double, and the Mountaineers' lead would hold for the remainder of the contest.

WVU added one more in the sixth off of freshman Beau Ridgeway though the Longhorns responded with a run of their own in the seventh thanks to a Jake McKenzie sac fly that made it 5-2.

In the bottom half, however, the Mountaineers picked up three in the seventh off senior Travis Duke to push their lead to a commanding 8-2.

With a single, a double and a two-run homer, West Virginia plated three more in the eighth off right-hander to make it 11-2 and put the game out of the Longhorns' reach.

The Longhorns and Mountaineers return to the field tomorrow for game two of the series. First pitch has been rescheduled for 2 p.m. ET (1 p.m. CT) due to the threat of inclement weather.
