The Longhorns evened the series behind a stellar eight-inning performance from Nolan Kingham and timely hits from Duke Ellis and DJ Petrinsky.
AUSTIN, Texas—Behind an eight-inning effort from Nolan Kingham, Texas Baseball rebounded to defeat Oklahoma State, 7-1, on Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns (14-10, 4-1 Big 12) and Cowboys (11-9-1, 1-1) will face off in a decisive game three on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Kingham (4-2) was stellar for eight innings against the Cowboys en route to his fourth win of the season. The right-hander, who last weekend tossed a complete game and on Tuesday night recorded the save, scattered seven hits and did not issue a walk while allowing just one run and striking out five on the day.
The junior was perfect through three frames before allowing a pair of hits in the fourth. He allowed the lone Cowboy run in the sixth inning thanks to a pair of two-out hits, but that would be all of the scoring against him in the ballgame.
The Texas offense got on the board first in the third inning when, after David Hamilton walked, stole second, and moved to third on a fly out, Duke Ellis hit a two-out single through the left side to make it 1-0 in favor of the Longhorns.
Texas tacked on another in the fourth when Zach Zubia came around to score on a wild pitch.
In the fifth, Ellis came through once again with a two-out knock. After Tate Shaw doubled to open the inning, Ellis came up and beat out a tough infield single that plated Shaw and gave the Longhorns a 3-0 advantage.
After the Cowboys got one back in the top of the sixth, Texas pulled away in the bottom half. Zubia walked to lead off the inning and Austin Todd singled to put two on. With one out, DJ Petrinsky took the first pitch he saw down the left field line, driving in two and putting Texas out in front, 5-1. A throwing error would eventually score Petrinsky and Texas led, 6-1, after six.
In the seventh, following a Kody Clemens double and a ground ball, Todd lifted a sac fly to right to push the Longhorns lead to 7-1.
With Kingham out of the ballgame after the eighth, Beau Ridgeway came on in relief. The junior got two groundouts and a strikeout to shut the door and seal the win for the Longhorns.
Game three of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT tomorrow at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
